Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings will be holding their annual Spring Camp Thursday, May 26 through Sunday, May 29, with on-ice sessions taking place at the NAIT Arena. The Oil Kings are welcoming 20 of their prospects to this year's camp who will be arriving tonight and hitting the ice starting Friday.
This year's attendees are all draft picks from both the 2010 and 2011 WHL Bantam Drafts. Some notable names among the group are 2010 first-round picks Curtis Lazar (2nd overall) and Mason Geertsen (18th overall), as well as recent 2011 first-round pick Aaron Irving (9th overall).
The goal of the Spring Camp is to get the young talent more familiar with the Oil Kings organization and to give the team's coaches and management a better look at the skills and strengths of the young players whom they hope will be an integral part of the organization's future success.
"I think this camp provides a good opportunity for these kids to come in and get their feet wet and break the ice a little bit," said Oil Kings General Manager Bob Green. "These guys aren't actually trying out for the team this weekend so they don't have the pressures of an actual training camp. When they do come back to main camp in August, they will know what to expect, and that will give them a better chance to make the team."
The group will participate in fitness testing and workouts on Friday and Saturday morning, followed by on-ice sessions each day at the NAIT Arena (11762 - 106 Street). On-ice sessions are scheduled for Friday from 2 to 4 p.m., and Saturday from 3 to 5 p.m. Oil Kings management, coaches and players will be available to the media on Friday at 1 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. for one hour before the players take to the ice at NAIT.
Oil Kings veterans Mark Pysyk, Keegan Lowe, Travis Ewanyk, T.J. Foster, Stephane Legault and Klarc Wilson will be assisting with the camp and will also be available for interviews.
