
Oil Kings Announce 2022-23 Leadership Group

Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings have announced they will have four alternate captains for the 2022-23 season.
Serving in the leadership capacity this season will be 2002-born defenceman Logan Dowhaniuk, 2002-born forward Jaxsen Wiebe, 2003-born defenceman Ethan Peters and 2004-born forward Rhett Melnyk.
Dowhaniuk, a Sherwood Park, AB product, has spent his entire five-year WHL career with the Oil Kings appearing 195 games and registering 77 points (17G, 60A), a +41 plus/minus rating and 132 penalty minutes.
His +41 plus/minus rating ranks seventh all-time amongst Oil Kings defenceman in franchise history.
Dowhaniuk holds the franchise record for most points in a single-game by a defenceman, and a share of the club's franchise record for most points in a single-game by any player, with six (2G, 4A) from a game in Red Deer against the Rebels on April 2, 2021.
He was originally drafted by the Oil Kings in the second round, 26th overall, of the 2017 WHL Prospects Draft.
Last season, he was named the winner of the Oil Kings Top Defenceman award.
This past September, he attended the Arizona Coyotes rookie camp as a free agent invite.
Wiebe, a Moose Jaw, SK product, is in his second season with the Oil Kings after he was acquired from the Red Deer Rebels on May 17, 2021.
As a member of the Oil Kings, he has appeared in 53 games, scoring 37 points (11G, 26A) to go along with a +16 plus/minus rating and 108 penalty minutes. In his WHL career, he has played 126 games and has tallied 57 points (20G, 37A).
On June 23, 2022 in a game against the Saint John Sea Dogs, he became the first Oil Kings player in modern franchise history to score a hat-trick in a game at the Memorial Cup.
This past September, he was invited to attend the Winnipeg Jets rookie camp but was unable to attend due to injury.
Peters, also a Moose Jaw, SK product, is in his third season with the Oil Kings after being signed by the club on January 4, 2021.
In his career, he has suited up in 91 games and has registered 25 points (4G, 21A), a +40 plus/minus rating and 38 penalty minutes.
His +40 plus/minus rating ranks eighth all-time amongst Oil Kings defenceman in franchise history.
Following his rookie season, he became the first ever Oil Kings player to receive the WHL's Daryl K. (Doc) Seaman Memorial Trophy as the league's Scholastic Player of the Year.
In September 2021, he attended the Toronto Maple Leafs rookie camp as a free agent invite.
Melnyk, a Fort Saskatchewan, AB product, is in his first season with the Oil Kings and third in the WHL after being acquired by Edmonton on August 9.
In 97 career WHL games, he has put up 33 points (12G, 21A), a -49 plus/minus rating and 35 penalty minutes.
This season, he currently leads the Oil Kings in scoring with six points (3G, 3A) in 11 games.
