Brockton Rox News Release

QUEBEC CITY, QUEBEC - (August 26, 2009) - The Brockton Rox defeated RHP Eric Gagne and the Quebec Capitales 4-3 on Wednesday night in Quebec City and officially sealed a return to the playoffs for the first time since 2006. Gagne battled with Rox starter RHP Wayne Lundgren in a refreshing pitchers' duel after Tuesday night's 27-run debacle.

Brockton jumped on the board first and never trailed. In the second inning, 3B Phillip Cuadrado put the Rox in front with a two-run double to deep centerfield, scoring DH Palmer Karr and 2B Melvin Falu. In the third inning, Falu delivered a clutch hit with a two-out, two-run single to push the Rox edge to 4-0.

In the subsequent half inning, Quebec touched up Lundgren for the first and only time of the night. C Pierre-Luc LaForest drove in a two runs with a two-out single of his own, cutting the lead to 4-2. The two RBIs gave LaForest eight for the series.

The starting pitchers battled from that point forward. Lundgren's pitch count rose steadily and he departed after the sixth inning, despite retiring the final four batters he faced. Gagne meanwhile, seemed to get stronger as the night wore on. After Falu's two-out single in the third inning, Gagne allowed just one more hit, pitching through the eighth inning.

Rox RHP Keith Noe was excellent in two innings of relief. He struck out four batters and allowed just one hit with two scoreless frames.

With closer RHP Jerry Dunn on for the ninth, Capitales' 1B Alex Nunez hit the first pitch he saw over the right field wall for a solo home run which cut the lead to 4-3. Dunn then retired the next three batters on three ground outs to end the game and record his 20th save of the season.

On Thursday night, the Rox and Capitales will square off in the regular season finale between the two clubs who seem destined for a post-season matchup. Brockton's RHP Jeff Long (5-4, 4.06 ERA) will oppose Quebec starter RHP Michel Simard (7-6, 4.05 ERA). Thursday night's first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
