Offensive Explosion Powers AquaSox

EVERETT, Wash.- One night after the Everett AquaSox (22-14) were held to just one run, they exploded Sunday afternoon for 11 runs on 15 hits to take game four of the five-game series.

Everett jumped out in front in the bottom of the first when Ryan Royster led off with a double before Hawkins Gebbers walked to put two runners on with no outs. Mario Martinez then hit a sharp grounder right at the shortstop Joey Wong which was turned into a double play - sending Royster to third. Gerardo Avila came up and sent a Sheng-An Kuo (L, 1-1) fastball deep into the blue sky for his fifth home run of the season. The long ball gave the AquaSox a 2-0 lead.

The AquaSox used more power to put runs on the board in the bottom of the second. With one out, Brandon Bantz was hit by a pitch before Matt Cerione hit a two-run homer deep to center field. The home run was Cerione's first of his career and extended the lead to 4-0. Anthony Phillips followed with a double off the right-center field wall and Hawkins Gebbers added a two-out single to send Phillips to third. Martinez helped tack on another run when he singled to score Phillips making the score 5-0.

The Dust Devils got a run back in the top of the third. Alex Feinberg led off the inning by reaching on an error by the first baseman Avila before Joey Wong walked to put runners at first and second with one out. Tim Wheeler singled to load the bases and Shane Lowe added a sac fly to score Feinberg to make the score 5-1.

The AquaSox offense did not let up as they tacked on another run in the bottom of the third. Bantz hit a one-out single before going to third on an Anthony Phillips single. Royster drove Bantz in with a single of his own to make the score 6-1.

The Dust Devils would not go away as they added a run in the top of the fourth on a Feinberg double that scored Kent Matthes cutting into the Everett lead at 6-2.

The Everett bats were hot all day as Avila hit a one-out double in the bottom of the fourth. Avila scored on a Jones single making the score 7-2.

Tri-City used a Matthes single to score Ben Paulsen, who doubled earlier in the inning. The RBI-single made the score 7-3.

Every time the Dust Devils inched closer, the AquaSox answered right back. Martinez led off the bottom of the sixth with a triple and came in to score on an Avila sac fly, giving the Frogs a comfortable 8-3 lead.

Everett continued the onslaught, scoring three more runs in the bottom of the seventh. Phillips started things off when he hit the first pitch he saw out of the park. Later in the inning, Jones added a two-RBI single - scoring Martinez and Royster to put the Frogs in front 11-3.

The Dust Devils made a comeback attempt in the top of the ninth as they scored two runs but Brad Reid came out of the bullpen and stopped the damage to give the AquaSox a 11-5 victory.

The AquaSox and Dust Devils will play the series finale Monday morning at 11:05 a.m. Andrew Carraway (3-0, 1.42) will get the start for the AquaSox. Carraway will be opposed by left-hander Matt Baugh (0-3, 9.35).
