Frederick Keys News Release
FREDERICK, MD - A two-run home run from Sherten Apostel proved to be the difference as the Frederick Keys (18-29, 47-69) dropped a 4-2 contest to the Down East Wood Ducks (29-19, 79-39) on Saturday night at Nymeo Field. The Keys tied the game 2-2 in the fifth inning but were held scoreless over the final four frames. The Wood Ducks bullpen held strong as they struck out six of the last nine batters faced.
The Keys offense broke through in the fifth. Cadyn Grenier led off with a triple into right field and he scored on a blooper single from Sean Miller to cut the lead in half.
Alex Eubank then retired the next two batters, but Cole Billingsley worked a tough at-bat and was able to lace a single into right-field to score Miller and tie the game. Billingsley then stole second and took third on a wild pitch but was stranded there.
The Wood Ducks answered back in the sixth. After Scott Burke (1-2) induced two long fly-outs, he allowed a base hit to JP Martinez and then surrendered a towering blast to Apostel.
Eubanks (9-4) set down the side in the sixth and earned the win. He allowed two runs on eight hits, did not walk a batter and struck out a pair.
Cole Uvila was lights out for Down East. He struck out five of six batters faced while Jefferson Medina (S, 4) induced the fourth double-play of the night to close out the ninth.
Burke came in relief of Brenan Hanifee, who labored through five innings. Hanifee allowed the bases to load in the second and gave up a run in favor of a double-play as he was able to limit the damage. Curtis Terry mashed a solo home run with two-outs in the third inning and that was all Hanifee allowed.
The Keys and Wood Ducks square off for a rubber match on Sunday, August 11. RHP David Lebron (2-4, 3.72) takes the mound for Frederick against RHP Noah Bremer (2-0, 2.91) for Potomac. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00pm with pregame coverage starting at 12:45pm on the Tune In app and frederickkeys.com.
The Frederick Keys are the Advanced-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, and play their home games at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium.
