Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
YORK, Pa. - The Sugar Land Skeeters were unable to capitalize on a strong start from Sean Gallagher, dropping a 5-1 decision to York at Santander Stadium. The loss moves the Skeeters back to .500 at 39-39 on the season and 3-5 in the second half.
Sugar Land starter, Sean Gallagher was masterful in his first four innings of work, but ran into trouble in the bottom of the fifth. Following a leadoff walk to Andres Perez, James Simons hit a one-out double into the left field corner to move both runners into scoring position with one out. The Skeeters brought the infield in with hopes of cutting a run down at the plate. Gallagher induced a sharply hit ground ball to second baseman Renny Osuna, but the newcomer was unable to make an accurate throw to the plate, allowing the Revolution to break the scoring seal. With runners on the corners, the Skeeters' right-hander got Wilson Valdez to roll-over on his first-pitch offering to second, but a bobble by Osuna hindered Sugar Land's double play hopes, allowing the second run to come home.
York would increase the lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth. Bryan Pounds hit his second home run in as many days with a solo shot to left off Derek Blacksher.
Sugar Land narrowed the deficit in the top of the seventh, and would have tied the game if not for a phenomenal defensive play from center fielder James Simmons. Delwyn Young singled to left with one out before Allan Dykstra recorded his first hit of the season, singling off the glove of Perez at first to put two aboard and chasing York starter, Rommie Lewis from the game. A passed ball on the first pitch from Tony Pena moved both runners into scoring position. Patrick Palmeiro blasted a ball to deep center field, but Simmons robbed the Skeeters' third baseman of a home run, leaping and bringing the ball back from over the fence. Young would come in to score on the sac fly, but that was all the Skeeters would manufacture.
The Revolution would add a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth to put the game out of reach for Sugar Land. Valdez opened the inning with a double to left off reliever John Lujan. Following back-to-back flyouts, Lujan appeared as if he would escape the inning unscathed. An intentional walk to Pounds came back to hurt as Ferdinand and Perez both drove in runs with RBI singles on hit-and-run plays, giving York a 5-1 lead going to the ninth.
The Skeeters would go down in order in the top of the ninth, giving Sugar Land its second-straight loss, 5-1.
