Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Bridgeport, CT - July 16, 2015) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (6-1, 32-45) swept a doubleheader from the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (4-3, 46-31) at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Thursday evening, taking the opening game 2-0 and winning the second of the seven innings contests 6-3. Bridgeport has now won three consecutive games, and eight of their last nine overall and stay atop the second half Liberty Division standings.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Kameron Loe (2-2) picked up the victory in the opener in dominant fashion, firing a seven inning complete game shutout, allowing just one hit, striking out six and walking none. The right hander retired the first 14 batters he faced before allowing a two-out single to Jake Opitz in the top of the fifth inning, the lone Blue Crabs baserunner in the ballgame. Southern Maryland Starting Pitcher Jake Hale (9-3) also went the distance in suffering the loss, pitching six innings, allowing two runs on five hits, striking out four and not issuing a free pass.
Bridgeport grabbed the early 2-0 lead and never looked back in the bottom of the first inning off Hale. Bryant Nelson and Welington Dotel reached on back to back singles with one out. John Alonso brought both runners home with an opposite field two run double. Alonso has now driven in 39 runs on the season, tops on the Bridgeport team. Loe did the rest with his second consecutive quality start. In his two outings since the All-Star Break, Loe has now pitched fourteen scoreless innings, walking just one batter and striking out 12. Josh Prince, Nelson, Dotel, Alonso, and Andres Rodriguez had the five hits for the Bluefish in the game.
In game two, Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Robert Carson picked up a no-decision, tossing four innings, allowing three runs (one earned run) on three hits, striking out six without allowing a walk and surrendering one home run. Southern Maryland Starting Pitcher Brian Burres also did not factor in the game's final outcome, pitching five innings, giving up two runs (one earned run) on three hits, walking two and striking out three and throwing one wild pitch.
Southern Maryland took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a two-out, two run home run by Gustavo Molina off Carson. Bridgeport answered right back in the bottom of the first off Burres on run scoring singles by Welington Dotel and John Alonso, plating Josh Prince and Bryant Nelson. The base knock by Dotel extended his hitting streak to a team and season high 15 consecutive games.
Southern Maryland would take the lead for the second time in the game 3-2 in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Molina off Carson, scoring Zach Wilson who led off with a double. Bridgeport had absolutely no quit in them as they mounted a rally of their own in the sixth inning, sending eight batters to the plate picking up four runs off Southern Maryland reliever and losing pitcher Cody Eppley (1-2). Andres Rodriguez tied the game at three with a sacrifice fly, bringing home Alonso. After an intentional walk to Brandon Jones, Luis Rodriguez brought in Wilson Batista with an infield single, and just like that the Bluefish led for the first time. Matt Wessinger continued the rally with a two run double to right field, scoring Jones and Rodriguez, and the 'Fish turned a one run deficit into a three run lead at 6-3. The rest was left up to Patrick Mincey, and for the second straight night he closed out the game for his team-leading 13th save. Sam Gervacio (4-4) registered the win out of the bullpen, retiring all three batters he faced, striking out one. Dotel led the way for Bridgeport with two hits.
Bridgeport now welcomes in the Sugar Land Skeeters to the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Friday, July 17th to begin a three-game weekend series. First pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
