New York Boulders News Release
(TROIS-RIVIERES, Quebec) - The Rockland Boulders scored six runs in the first inning and never looked back, pounding Trois-Rivieres 15-1 on Sunday afternoon. Rockland's victory, coupled with a New Jersey loss to Quebec, has propelled the Boulders (23-17) into first place in the Can-Am League.
It all began in the first inning when Rockland scored six runs to begin the onslaught. Steve Nyisztor plated two runs with a single before Stephen Cardullo and Junior Arrojo each added two-run base hits of their own. That proved to be more than enough for starting pitcher Sean Bierman as he dominated Les Aigles (15-27) throughout. With a six run advantage, Bierman cruised through the first three innings facing just one batter over the minimum.
The Boulders then continued the offensive performance with a four run fourth. Nyisztor, Joe Maloney, Cardullo, and Marcus Nidiffer all singled in consecutive at-bats, plating four more runs to make it a 10-0 advantage after four innings. It was Nidiffer's base hit that finally knocked Tyler Wilson out of the game, giving way to Andrew Ferreira. Maloney later homered for the second time in as many days, giving the Boulders an 11-0 lead after six innings.
Ryan Stovall added a three-run shot of his own before Trois-Rivieres finally got on the board in the bottom half of the seventh. After Michael Hernandez tripled to lead off the inning, Joey Side singled for the lone run of the day for Les Aigles. The Boulders got that run back on Maloney's second homer of the night, this one in the ninth, for the final margin.
Bierman (3-4) got the win by going a full eight innings, allowing one run on just three hits while striking out seven. Nathaniel Roe pitched a scoreless ninth in relief for the Boulders, who used just two batters all game. Wilson (1-2) lasted just three and one-third innings, giving up 10 runs on 10 hits. Trois-Rivieres used two extra pitchers, both of whom allowed runs in the loss. Maloney was once again the top offensive performer, going 5-for-5 with four runs batted in while Nyisztor and Cardullo each drove in three runs.
The Boulders will go for the series sweep tomorrow night against Les Aigles. First baseman Jerod Edmondson, who went 0-for-4 on Saturday, will continue to try and become the first Boulders player in Can-Am League history with 700 career hits.
