Trenton Thunder News Release
Michael King turned in his ninth consecutive quality start, and received superb relief help and a wealth of run support in an 8-1 win over the Portland Sea Dogs on Thursday night at ARM & HAMMER Park.
King struck out eight batters and scattered four hits over seven scoreless innings for the Thunder (57-46). James Reeves and Brady Lail each worked one inning in relief, with the latter yielding the only Portland (42-60) run of the game on an RBI-groundout by Jhon Nunez in the ninth inning.
The Sea Dogs run ended the Thunder pitching staff's remarkable scoreless inning streak at 26 innings.
The Thunder plated their first run in the second inning, when Gosuke Katoh led off with a walk, stole second and later scored on a throwing error by Portland third baseman Michael Chavis. Ryan McBroom led off the bottom of the fourth with a home run off Sea Dogs starter Daniel McGrath, and later in the inning, Zack Zehner beat out an infield single and eventually scored from third on a wild pitch.
Jeff Hendrix added an RBI-double in the sixth off Portland reliever Adam Lau to extend Trenton's lead to 4-0. The Thunder capped their scoring against Harrison Cooney in the bottom of the eighth, loading the bases on three consecutive walks before a wild pitch, a Devyn Bolasky RBI-groundout, and a two-run homer by Trey Amburgey stretched the Thunder lead to eight runs.
The home run was Amburgey's 13th of the season, tying him with Jhalan Jackson for the team lead, while Zehner and Wendell Rijo led the Thunder with two hits each in the game.
The victory was the third straight for the Thunder, who had not won more than two games in a row since stringing together five consecutive wins from May 25 to 29.
Your Thunder continue their homestand on Friday night at 7pm against the Sea Dogs. RHP Trevor Stephan (2-7, 5.17) will start for the Thunder, and LHP Kyle Hart (6-7, 4.15) will go for Portland. For the evening's Christmas in July celebration, the first 1,025 fans ages 18 and up will receive a Christmas ornament, presented by NJM Insurance. Tickets are available by phone at 609-394-3300 or online at TrentonThunder.com.
