Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Kinston, NC - Winston-Salem's offense erupted for 13 hits in a 9-4 rout of Kinston in the series finale at Grainger Stadium on Thursday night. Catcher John Curtis paced the way with a season-high three hits and two RBI for the Dash, who finished their nine-game road swing at 5-4. Winston-Salem has defeated Kinston in eight of their last nine meetings.
Kinston took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning off Wander Perez when Ole Sheldon dropped a two-out single into right field that scored Cord Phelps from second base. The Indians added an unearned run in the fourth inning when Phelps hit a ground ball with two outs that rolled through the legs of first baseman Jimmy Gallagher and scored Tim Fedroff from third.
Perez, who was making his first start since he pitched with Rookie Bristol in 2006, went three innings and allowed one run on four hits with three walks, but did not figure in the decision.
A costly Kinston error in the top of the fifth inning allowed the Dash to score three unearned runs and take the lead. With two outs runners on first and second, Dale Mollenahauer hit a ground ball to Indians third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall, who threw wildly to first which allowed John Curtis to score from second. Center fielder Justin Greene followed with a two-run single to put the Dash in front 3-2.
Winston-Salem broke the game open with four runs in the top of the seventh inning against Bryce Stowell. Left fielder Tyler Kuhn and Curtis tallied back-to-back two-run singles to give the Dash a 7-2 lead.
Brent Morel put an exclamation point on the victory with a two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to extend Winston-Salem's lead to seven. It the first extra-base hit for the Dash, who registered 12 singles until the round-tripper in the last inning.
Levi Maxwell (3-10) worked three innings of relief and allowed an unearned run on two hits to collect the win. Stowell (1-5) allowed seven runs (four earned) on eight hits in three innings to take the loss.
Winston-Salem returns to Wake Forest Baseball Park on Friday, July 24 when they open a six-game home stand with the first of three against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. The Dash will send RHP Jacob Rasner (3-1, 3.16) to the mound in the opener, while the Pelicans are expected to start RHP Jacob Thompson (3-2, 3.31). The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Dash will host a fireworks extravaganza following Friday night's game and all tickets for Saturday's contest against the Pelicans are only $5 in advance and include a FREE Dash hat. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m. Single-game tickets can be purchased online at www.wsdash.com or by calling the Dash office at (336) 714-2287.
