EDINBURG, Texas - The Edinburg Roadrunners used a three-run bottom of the fifth inning to defeat the McAllen Thunder 8-3 Monday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

Tim Battle got the Thunder (14-24) on the board in the top of the first with an RBI single that scored Jorge Bishop from third making it 1-0.

The Roadrunners (17-21) tied things at one when Ryde Rodriguez scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the second inning.

After McAllen regained the lead in the top of the third, Edinburg answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning. Tim Maitland led the inning off with a triple to right center field and then came into score on a sacrifice fly by Agustin Septimo tying the game at two.

Joseph Hicks then gave the Thunder the 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth with his third home run of the season.

The Roadrunners answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Trevor Whyte got the scoring started in the inning with an RBI single that scored Septimo from second. Later in the inning, Carlton Salters delivered with a bases loaded RBI single that scored Whyte from third. A passed ball then allowed Dan Coury to score giving Edinburg the 5-3 lead.

Salters added an insurance run for the Roadrunners in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single that scored Fernando De Los Santos from second making it 6-3.

In the bottom of the eighth, Whyte added to Edinburg's lead with a two-run home run into the right field bullpen that it 8-3.

Damian Seguen struck out the side in the top of the ninth giving the Roadrunners the 8-3 victory.

Maximino De La Cruz (2-1) picked up the win after pitching six innings and allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits with seven strike outs.

Trent Evins (3-4) took the loss after allowing five runs, four earned, in six innings of work.

The Roadrunners and Thunder will play game three of their four-game series Tuesday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
