Aces Use Big Third Inning to Drop Cats at Home

July 1, 2013 - United League Baseball (ULB)
Fort Worth Cats News Release

The Fort Worth Cats dug themselves into a hole and were unable to cash in on run-scoring opportunities in Monday night's 7-6 loss to the Alexandria Aces at LaGrave Field.

Cats starter Eric Sheridan threw 91 pitches through 7.1 innings, shut the Aces (20-18) down in 1-2-3 fashion in five innings, but got the loss after allowing a six-run sixth inning.

Sheridan worked into trouble in the second inning, but got Aces' center fielder Chad Bunting to ground into a 5-4-3 triple play to end the inning.

After allowing one run in the third, Sheridan worked shortstop Michael Haynes into an 0-2 count, but Haynes drilled a double to center field, scoring another run. The Aces then strung together four hits in a row to go up 6-0.

The Cats (24-14) put up two runs in the bottom half in the third and proceeded to chip away at the Aces' lead, scoring one run in the sixth, two in the seventh and another in the eighth.

Alexandria added an unearned run in the eighth that turned out to be the game-winner, as Haynes reached on a throwing error by third baseman Greg Bachman.

The Cats left 11 runners on base in the game, their largest opportunity squandered when right fielder Daniel Meeley grounded into an inning-ending double play to end the eighth with the go-ahead runner in scoring position.

Fort Worth and Alexandria face off again tomorrow at 7:05 at LaGrave Field.

Tickets to all home games can be purchased by going to FWCats.com or by calling (817) 332-CATS.
