Aces Use Big Two-Out Hits to Edge Fort Worth

Alexandria Aces News Release

FORT WORTH- The Alexandria Aces collected five hits with two men out to highlight a 6-run third inning to highlight a 7-6 victory against the Fort Worth Cats.

Michael Haynes, Nick Mahin, Austin Newell, Derrick Pyles, and Chad Bunting all collected hits off Cats starter Eric Sheridan in the third to give the Aces a commanding 6-0 lead for Ryan Zimmerman (3-2).

Fort Worth would slowly scratch back in the game, scoring two runs in the bottom of the third on a double by Chris Ellison and an Aljay Davis single, one more in the sixth on four walks by Aces pitching, and two in the seventh on a 2-run opposite field single in the seventh from David Bergin to make the score 6-5.

But Newell, playing in his home town, hit an opposite field double off Sheridan (4-2) to score Haynes with an insurance run in the top of the eighth.

Then, after Ryan Miller, Ellison, and Davis all collected hits of Michael Calderon in the bottom of the inning to make the score 7-6, the lefthanded reliever threw a wild pitch to advance Davis to second with Shelby Ford up. Ford was then intentionally walked with the count 2-1 to load the bases with one out for lefthanded hitting Daniel Meeley.

The strategy worked, as Meeley hit a ground ball to Haynes at shortstop that was converted to a classic 6-4-3 double play.

Gabe Grammer pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his fifth save.

The Cats turned a triple play in the top of the second, when Chad Bunting grounded to third baseman Greg Bachman with runners on first and second base for a traditional 5-4-3 trifecta.
