Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
The Chicago Cubs have announced the following roster moves that impact the Myrtle Beach Pelicans roster:
OF D.J. Artis has been promoted to Myrtle Beach from Low-A South Bend
C Eric Gonzalez has been promoted to Myrtle Beach from Low-A South Bend
C Tyler Payne has been promoted to Double-A Tennessee from Myrtle Beach
RHP Erich Uelmen has been promoted to Double-A Tennessee from Myrtle Beach
Artis, an outfielder in his first full professional season, joins the Birds after playing in 49 games with the South Bend Cubs. Over those games, he hit .267/.390/.375, but has been promoted after hitting .367 (11-for-30) over his last eight games. A seventh-round selection by the Cubs in 2018, Artis had an incredible career at Liberty University. The outfielder was the Big South Freshman of the Year in 2016 and the Big South Player of the Year in 2017, hitting .359/.532/.552 while leading the country with 62 walks in 52 games. Over his career, he walked 166 times in 169 games while just striking out 107 times. Those 166 walks are a program record at Liberty, 71 more than the second-place player had. He left the Flames as one of three players with more than 200 hits, 165 runs and 65 stolen bases in program history. Before going to Liberty, he was drafted in the 40th round by the Boston Red Sox in 2016.
Gonzalez, who played alongside Artis for Pelicans manager Steve Lerud for Short Season Low A Eugene in 2018, enters Myrtle Beach to fill the void left by Payne at catcher. Gonzalez hit .218/.293.256 with South Bend over 43 games and excelled defensively. Gonzalez threw out 22-of-51 potential base stealers (43.1 percent) while starting 41 of the 43 games he played in behind the plate. Signed as an international free agent by the Cubs out of the Dominican Republic in 2014, the catcher played parts of five seasons with the DSL Cubs before playing in affiliated, state-side baseball with Eugene for the first time in 2018.
Artis will wear No. 6 while Gonzalez will wear No. 24. The Pelicans roster now sits at 25 active with six on the Injured List.
