St. George RoadRunners News Release
ST. GEORGE - The Orange County Flyers continued their current tear in the Golden Baseball League handing St. George an 8-3 loss at Bruce Hurt Field on Wednesday. The Flyers (10-9) have won nine in a row to pull into sole possession of second place in the GBL South while the RoadRunners (15-9) are on their first two-game losing streak of the year.
OC starter Matt Durkin baffled St. George hitter over eight solid innings after a shaky start. Ryan Stevenson doubled to lead off the first and scored when Yosvany Almario reached on an error. Angel Sanchez plated Almario with an RBI groundout. After handing the RoadRunners an early lead, Durkin (2-2) allowed only three more hits and an unearned run over the next seven frames to earn the victory.
On the other hand, St. George starter Monte Mansfield (1-2) fell victim to two four-run spurts. In the visiting second, Fernando Pacheco singled with one out and Travis Bechtel was hit by a pitch. Juan Senreiso singled home Pacheco and Jimmy Rohan was also hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jim Goethals doubled high off the left field wall to plate a couple. Damian Jackson capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly to left field.
The home club cut OC's lead to one in the fourth on a RBI groundout by Jose Rodriguez scoring A.J. Valentine.
Orange County struck for their second four-run inning in the fifth. Jackson led off with a single. Three RBI doubles followed quickly by Nick Guerra, Robert Fick and Julian Benavidez. Becktel knocked in the final run with a single to right.
One bright spot for St. George was the relief appearance by Justin Abbott. Over four innings, Abbott did not allow a run on two hits while striking out three.
Orange County had 11 hits on the night. Jackson and Senreiso each had two. The RoadRunners had only five hits as a team with Valentine getting credit for two singles.
The RoadRunners look to salvage the series finale on Thursday beginning at 7:05pm by sending right-hander David Seccombe (2-0, 6.00) to the hill.
Audio coverage begins with the Infowest Pre-Game Show at 6:50pm.
