PCL1 New Orleans Baby Cakes

O'Brien Stays Hot as Gallen Quiets Redbirds

August 21, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

Peter O'Brien cracked a three-run homer and Zac Gallen spun six scoreless innings as the New Orleans Baby Cakes shut out the Memphis Redbirds, 5-0 on Tuesday night.

The Baby Cakes returned to the .500 mark at 63-63, winners of 13 of their last 16 games.

Gallen got some help from his defense to keep the Redbirds off the board in the third. With runners at first and second, Tommy Edman singled to left and Wilfredo Tovar appeared to beat J.B. Shuck's throw to the plate, but the umpire ruled he never touched the plate, and catcher Austin Nola tagged Tovar for the second out of the inning. Lane Thomas flied out to center to end the threat.

Memphis starter Tyler Lyons retired the first nine batters he faced until a leadoff walk to Braxton Lee in the fourth. Chris Bostick singled with one out before O'Brien hit a towering home run over the wall in left-center, his seventh home run in the last nine games.

O'Brien is hitting .433 during his nine-game hitting streak with 14 RBI.

After stranding a pair of baserunners in the fourth, Gallen (8-7) sailed through the final eight hitters of his outing, four of which were strikeouts. The right-hander finished with six strikeouts in six innings, allowing four hits with two walks. Gallen owns a 1.40 ERA in 10 starts at home.

The 'Cakes added an insurance tally in the seventh on an RBI double by Jon Rodriguez, and another in the eighth after Lee tripled to lead off the inning and scored on Isan Diaz's sacrifice fly.

Joe Gunkel, Dylan Lee and Kyle Keller each chipped in an inning out of the bullpen to complete the Baby Cakes' 11th shutout of the year, second-most in the PCL. A Metairie native making his Shrine debut, Keller fanned two of the three Redbirds he faced.

Lyons (0-1) was charged with three runs on three hits in 5 1/3 innings and took the loss for Memphis, which has lost seven of its last nine.

The teams continue the three-game set on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
