Oakley CHL Player and Goaltender of the Week Announced
Published on October 30, 2006 under Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
The Week Two recipients of the Oakley Central Hockey League Player and Goaltender of the Week awards have been determined. Right winger Brent Kelly of the expansion Arizona Sundogs has been named the Oakley CHL Player of the Week, while Memphis netminder Larry Sterling has been selected as the Oakley Goaltender of the Week.
Kelly made a dramatic debut to the Sundogs lineup Friday night, scoring twice in Arizona's 3-1 win at New Mexico. Kelly converted a first period power play opportunity to score the historic first ever goal at the brand new Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, then added the game winning goal midway through the third period. Two nights later he helped his club improve to 3-1-0 on the season with a four point outing in a 5-4 (SO) win at Amarillo. Kelly assisted on regulation goals by Torrie Wheat, Chris Greene and Chris Bartalone, then potted the game winning score in the shootout competition.
Sterling led the RiverKings to their first two wins of the season, claiming back to back home victories over Bossier-Shreveport Friday and Saturday. He turned aside 28 of 29 shots in a 3-1 win Friday, and 20 of 21 in a 2-1 (SO) victory the following night. Sterling's fine play propelled him to at or near he top of most CHL goaltending categories with two wins, a 1.84 GAA and a .934 save percentage. His win Friday was the 25th of his CHL career, with the previous 24 coming as a member of the Fort Worth Brahmas.
