Oakland Roots News Release
Roots emerged victorious for their first home win of the 2021 season in front of a packed house at their alternate venue of Merritt College. The game saw Roots go down 0-1 from a free kick goal by Jorge Hernández in the 12th minute. Roots luck quickly changed in the 23rd when a foul by Owen Lambe of Galaxy II resulted in a red card. Just three short minutes later, Roots scored back to back goals in the 25th and 26th minutes both from Oakland raised players. The first off a beautiful strike by Max Ornstil and the second from Yohannes Harish from close range.
From there, Roots worked to maintain possession and tire out the Galaxy II squad who were playing with only 10 men for the bulk of the game. The team kept their legs fresh on the field, utilizing all five of their substitutions in the second half. Offensively, they looked to increase their lead and had some good chances, but in the end settled for the 2-1 win.
Roots next travel to New Mexico on Wednesday night.
Head Coach Jordan Ferrell's Initial Takeaways:
Yeah, good overall performance from the team, and had a fortunate red card. I think the one thing that concerned me is the opportunities we didn't take. We had plenty of good situations that needed simple finishes but we made the game harder for ourselves. It's good to get on the win column, but hopefully LA Galaxy II isn't the only team we are beating this season.
They score early, take us through the game plan from there:
Obviously a little tweak, we're going to see different bits and pieces in the lineup in the coming weeks. We rested Matias Fissore but brought him in for the second half to give us a little more security with the lead. I think we did a really good job of pressing them early and forcing them to play the ball. I think that's what ultimately led to that red card. I think that gave us some good momentum. Getting that second goal before the half makes a big difference. It allowed us to make some tweaks in the second half to maintain the lead and get the win.
