NYCFC Holds Nashville SC to a Draw

New York City FC were seeking some Sunday success against Nashville SC at Red Bull Arena. The hosts produced a number of good chances, but couldn't find a breakthrough. The first half saw Alex Callens denied a goal by an offside call, and although Jesús Medina, Taty Castellanos, and Maxi Moralez all had good opportunities they could not produce a goal.

NYCFC were on the hunt for a win on Sunday afternoon against Nashville SC at Red Bull Arena.

Head Coach Ronny Deila reintroduced James Sands and Taty Castellanos to the starting XI for Talles Magno and Nicolás Acevedo after the pair missed the midweek game against Chicago Fire due to suspension.

Castellanos would be heavily involved in the early exchanges, and after pouncing on a loose ball he fed Maxi Moralez, but his effort ended up wide of the goal.

The forward then came close himself from a Jesús Medina corner, only for the post to deny him the opening goal of the game.

A rapid start to the game hit its peak when Alex Callens crashed a header into the net. His celebrations were short-lived, however, with the assistant's flag raised for offside.

NYCFC were managing to produce some nice interchanges in midfield, but a resolute and packed Nashville defence left little space for them to exploit.

The first half also saw an unfortunate injury to Anton Tinnerholm in the 33rd minute that forced the Swedish defender to leave the field in place of Tayvon Gray.

Nashville's best chance of the first half came in injury time when a deep cross from Taylor Washington found Daniel Lovitz, but his effort skipped by the right hand post.

The second half brought no changes, but a renewed sense of intent from NYCFC. In the 55th minute, a smart ball in behind by Gudi Thórarinsson allowed Medina to fire a cross in that was palmed into the path of Moralez, but his attempt went over the bar.

Chances were proving few and far between, and a long-range effort from Randall Leal did not prove dangerous for Sean Johnson.

In the 71st minute, Ronny Deila introduced Thiago Andrade and Malte Amundsen in place of Santiago Rodríguez and Thórarinsson.

Nashville came close to breaking the deadlock in the 74th minute when a corner was glanced towards Brian Anunga at the back post, but he failed to keep his effort down.

At the other end, some selfless running by Medina allowed him to intercept a poor clearance and get an attempt at goal, but it was well saved by Joe Willis.

NYCFC were starting to ramp up the pressure and in the 81st minute Thiago fired off a shot that went just wide of the Nashville goal.

Despite their best efforts the Boys in Blue could not find the much-needed goal and that forced them to settle for a point in their pursuit of a playoff spot.

Next up for New York City is a Hudson River Derby against Red Bulls on Saturday, October 17, at Red Bull Arena. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00PM EST (YES Network/NYCFC.com/Radio).
