Modesto Nuts News Release
STOCKTON, CA. - A pair of late home runs helped the Modesto Nuts secure a 7-5 victory over the Stockton Ports on Wednesday night at Banner Island Ballpark.
After Ryan Gridley had tied the game for the Ports (51-57; 18-22) with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth, the Nuts (49-61; 19-21) took the lead for good in the top of the sixth.
Jarred Kelenic whacked a solo home run to start the sixth against Ports starter Xavier Altamirano (W, 5-8). After a double by Joe Rizzo and a walk by Jake Scheiner, Altamirano was removed from the game. Michael Danielak came out of the bullpen and served up a three-run homer to Keegan McGovern. McGovern drove in four runs in the game.
Altamirano was charged with six runs over 5.1 innings on six hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
The Ports were able to push across two runs in the eighth inning. That forced Kyle Wilcox (S, 2) into a save situation which he secured over a scoreless ninth with two strikeouts.
Clay Chandler (W, 1-1) heaved five innings for the Nuts allowing three runs on five hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
The Nuts eye a sweep on Thursday night in the three-game series finale against the Ports. First pitch is at 7:10 p.m. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com will start at 7:00 p.m. Listen live online on your phone, tablet or PC.
