San Jose Giants News Release
The Giants saw their four-game win streak snapped on Wednesday night with a 5-0 loss to the Lake Elsinore Storm at Excite Ballpark. Storm ace Luis Patino, one of the top pitching prospects in MiLB, fired 8 1/3 scoreless innings with only three hits allowed as Lake Elsinore evened the series at a game apiece. The loss for San Jose was only their third in the last 13 games overall.
Patino, currently rated the #33 overall prospect in baseball by MLB.com, dazzled on the mound in Wednesday's contest. The 19-year old right-hander took a perfect game bid into the sixth inning and retired 25 of the 28 batters he faced during his start. Patino walked none and matched a career-high with nine strikeouts. His 2.63 ERA in 16 starts this season would lead the California League if he had enough innings to qualify.
Meanwhile, the Storm gave Patino more than enough offensive support with three runs in the top of the third and single tallies in the fifth and eighth. In the third, Aldemar Burgos ended a streak of six straight hitters retired by Giants starter Aaron Phillips when he belted a solo home run to left giving Lake Elsinore a 1-0 lead. Four straight singles followed to extend the Storm advantage to 3-0. Allen Cordoba and Xavier Edwards both singled to put runners on the corners. After Edwards stole second, Luis Campusano delivered an RBI single. Gabriel Arias then produced his own RBI single to stretch the lead to three runs.
Lake Elsinore made it 4-0 in the top of the fifth on a Jack Suwinski two-out RBI single. In the eighth, Campusano stepped to the plate with a runner at second and two outs and came through with another RBI single for a 5-0 cushion.
San Jose didn't manage a baserunner in the game until Dalton Combs led off the bottom of the sixth with a line drive single into center. Patino though quickly came back to retire the next three hitters. The Giants' only other hits were a David Villar two-out infield single in the bottom of the seventh and a Heath Quinn two-out double in the eighth. Patino was pulled from the game after retiring Manuel Geraldo on a groundout to begin the bottom of the ninth. Reliever Javy Guerra then entered and registered back-to-back strikeouts of Heliot Ramos and Joey Bart to end the game.
