Nuts Miss Opportunities in 6-5 Loss

Bakersfield, CA. - After tying the game in the ninth, the Modesto Nuts could not hold an eleventh-inning lead and fell 6-5 against the Bakersfield Blaze on Friday night at Sam Lynn Ballpark.

Rayder Ascanio dribbled a RBI single up the middle to drive in the tying run for the Blaze (34-58; 8-13) against Nuts' (46-45; 13-7) reliever Trent Daniel (L, 1-3) in the eleventh. Jay Baum followed with a RBI single to left to give the Blaze a walk-off win.

The Nuts had taken the lead in the bottom of the eleventh. Raimel Tapia cracked a single, his third hit of the night. Tapia was sacrificed to second and stole third with two outs. Tapia scored when Correlle Prime swung at a pitch in the dirt. Prime struck out but the pitch snuck past the Blaze catcher Daniel Torres. Tapia was able to score on the wild pitch.

The Nuts had tied the game in the top of the ninth on a throwing error by second baseman Nelson Ward.

In all, the Nuts collected 16 hits but scored just two earned runs. They went 4-for-23 with runners in scoring position and left 14 men on base.

Johendi Jiminian started the game for the Nuts and tossed five innings with eight hits, four runs, two earned with four strikeouts and no walks.

Will Mathis (W, 2-2) gave up the run in the eleventh but took the win for the Blaze who avoided the sweep.
