Blaze Deliver Walkoff Blow to Nuts in 11th, 6-5

After losing a 4-3 lead in the 9th and falling behind 5-4 in the 11th, the Bakersfield Blaze mustered one final rally, scoring twice in the bottom of the frame, and walking off on the Modesto Nuts, 6-5, on Fireworks Friday and K-12 Math Night at Sam Lynn Ballpark in Bakersfield.

Modesto got on the board first, plating an unearned run in the top of the 1st, but the Blaze came right back with two in the home half. Aaron Barbosa began the frame with a single to center, stole second and scored on a Tim Lopes double. With two outs, Kyle Petty slapped a base hit to right to plate Lopes.

Both starters settled down after the 1st inning, posting zeroes in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th, the in the 5th, the teams duplicated the 1st. Modesto got their final run off Scott DeCecco, who worked a solid five innings in his Blaze debut, and the Blaze countered with a two-spot in the home half, both unearned. An error to begin the frame was followed by an RBI single from Daniel Torres, and later in the frame, Lopes delivered a sacrifice fly to give Bako a 4-2 lead.

The Blaze moved to the bullpen in the 6th, and Kyle Schepel surrendered an unearned run to the Nuts to cut the Blaze lead to just 4-3, but bounced back with a scoreless 7th.

Aaron Brooks worked around a leadoff double in the 8th, but a pair of singles and a critical throwing error allowed the Nuts to tie it up in the 9th, 4-4.

After a scoreless 10th, the Nuts took the lead in the 11th off Will Mathis (W, 2-2) on a ball in the dirt, but the Blaze refused to go down without a fight.

In the bottom of the frame, with one out, Justin Seager doubled to left. Estarlyn Morales was inserted to pinch-run and scored the tying run on a Rayder Ascanio single to bring the score into a deadlock, 5-5. Ascanio promptly stole second base, and one pitch later, Jay Baum lined a game-winning single into left, sending the Blaze on the road happy with a 6-5 walkoff win.

The runs in the 11th came off Trent Daniel (L, 1-3)
