Modesto Nuts News Release

MODESTO, CA - A tough week of close losses continues for the Nuts as they were defeated by the Blaze, 3-2, on Thursday night at John Thurman Field.

Modesto (31-36) has now lost three straight and five of their last seven, losing the five games by a combined seven runs.

Trailing 3-0 in the eighth, Brian Humphries delivered a 2-out single that scored two runs to get the Nuts right back in the game. Modesto then put two in scoring position in the ninth, but Blaze closer Jamie Walczak finished off a five-out save by striking out Harold Riggings to preserve the win.

Bakersfield starter Shane Dyer (1-0) cruised through seven innings, allowing only four scattered hits until running into trouble in the eighth. Harold Riggins singled with one out in the inning, and Niko Gallego doubled off the fence in left to chase him from the game. Walczak then came in and struck out Tyler Massey before giving up the hit to Humprhies. Dyer totaled 7 1/3 innings of work for the win, and was charged for the two earned runs.

Ben Alsup (3-8) maneuvered out of some big jams to limit the Blaze to only three runs (two earned) in seven innings of work, but suffered a loss in his fourth consecutive outing.

The two clubs will return on Friday night for game two of a four game series. RHP Eddie Butler (2-1, 3.75) will make his fifth start for the Nuts, opposite RHP James Allen (4-5, 4.07) for the Blaze. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
