Lancaster JetHawks News Release
LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. - The JetHawks lost, 12-3, to the Lake Elsinore Storm at The Diamond on Thursday night but inched closer to the first half title thanks to an Inland Empire loss at High Desert.
The JetHawks can clinch the playoff berth on Friday night with a win and a 66ers loss. Their magic number is now two.
Brady Rodgers (5-4) struggled for his third straight outing. The right-hander lasted only 1 2/3 innings and allowed seven runs on six hits.
The Storm put up five runs against him in the first inning, four of which came with two outs. Travis Whitmore came up with the bases loaded and cleared the bases with a double to put the Storm up, 4-0. Kyle Gaedele followed with an RBI-hit.
Travis Jankowski, who had singled and stolen two bases in the first inning, led off the second inning with a triple and scored on a passed ball. After Rodgers retired two consecutive batters, Robert Kral singled up the middle and Rodney Linares brought Jonas Dufek in to finish the inning. Austin Hedges, the first batter Dufek faced, doubled in Kral.
Dufek allowed his own earned run in the third inning. Whitmore led off with a single and eventually scored on a Janowski groundout to put Lake Elsinore up, 8-0.
Tommy Shirley pitched perfect innings in the fourth and fifth, striking out four.
Piggy-back starter Chris Devenski struggled as well. He entered in the sixth inning and was only able to get one out before Linares replaced him with Cameron Lamb. Deenski allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits.
Lamb did not allow a run and retired all seven batters he faced.
The JetHawks spoiled the shutout in the seventh inning on a two-out, two-run doube for Chris Epps. They scored again in the eighth when Preston Tucker singled home Nolan Fontana.
James Needy (3-2) struck out six and allowed just three hits over five innings to pick up the win for the Storm.
The JetHawks (37-30) will try to clinch the first half title on Friday night against the Storm (27-40) at 7:05 pm in Lake Elsinore. Lancaster will send Tyson Perez to the mound against left-hander Frank Garces.
