Modesto Nuts News Release

LAKE ELSINORE, CA (August 23rd, 2013) -- One night after snapping their long nine-game winning streak, the Nuts quickly returned to their winning ways with a 5-3 victory over the Storm on Friday night in Lake Elsinore.

The win allowed Modesto (36-24, 68-62) to remain three games in front of San Jose for the North Division second-half lead. Only 10 games remain during the regular season.

After scoring three unearned runs against Nuts starter Ben Alsup in the bottom of the first, Lake Elsinore was held off the board the rest of the way. Alsup recorded two quick outs in the inning, but a passed ball on a strikeout to Jeremy Rodriguez prolonged the inning. The Storm went on to strike for three runs on three hits.

Modesto answered in the top of the second as Taylor Featherston drove in a run with two outs against Storm starter Johnny Barbato. The Nuts then tied it up in the third on an RBI single from Trevor Story, and with two outs, a run-scoring single from Jordan Ribera.

Meanwhile, Alsup was able to work around a lead off double in the bottom of the second, and went on to retire 13 in a row.

Barbato was replaced by Brandon Alger in the sixth, and Modesto was able to pull ahead with a pair of runs. A two-out RBI single from Featherston gave the Nuts their first lead, and Brian Humphries grounded into a fielder's choice to make it 5-3. On that play, the bases were loaded and Humphries hit the ball to shortstop B.J. Guinn, whose throw to second was not in time, allowing a run to score.

Alsup (12-8) would last six strong innings, giving up just the three unearned runs for the win. He is now 9-0 in 13 second half starts. Alger (4-9) took the loss.

Ryan Arrowood took over in the seventh and worked two hitless innings in relief. Scott Oberg worked around a lead-off walk in the ninth for his league-leading 31st save of the season.

Winner's of 10 of their last 11, the Nuts will have a chance to guarantee a split this weekend over the Storm as they continue with the second game of four in Lake Elsinore on Saturday night. LHP Tyler Anderson (2-2, 3.50) will get the start, opposite LHP Frank Garces (7-8, 5.10) for the Storm. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m.
