Nuts Beat Back Blaze in 5-4 Win

Modesto, CA. - Throughout the night, the Modesto Nuts fought back the Bakersfield Blaze' comeback attempts to win 5-4 on Saturday night at John Thurman Field.

The Blaze (19-10; 56-43) tied the game twice and loaded the bases in the ninth, but the Nuts (12-17; 38-61) never surrendered the lead and earned the win to set up a chance for a series victory in the four-game series finale on Sunday night.

Helmis Rodriguez (W, 2-6) worked 6.1 innings allowing four runs, three earned, with five strikeouts and no walks.

The Nuts' offense got to Blaze starter Eddie Campbell (L, 10-8) for five runs on eight hits over 4.1 innings. Wes Rogers drove in a run with a sac fly in the first.

After the Blaze tied it in the second, the Nuts came right back and plated two runs in the next half inning. Shane Hoelscher walked and Max White doubled to start the frame. Luis Jean drove in Hoelscher with a RBI groundout. White scored on a wild pitch.

The Blaze tied it again in the third but the Nuts put the first two runners on in the bottom of the fourth. White record a RBI with a groundout and Troy Stein lifted a sac fly.

Luis Niebla (S, 5/5) allowed a single and walked two in the ninth but struck out Aaron Barbosa to nail down the Nuts' triumph.
