Modesto Nuts News Release
MODESTO, CA (May 21st, 2013) -- Modesto pounded out a season-tying high seven-extra base hits and lead wire-to-wire in a 7-2 defeat of the Rawhide on Tuesday night at John Thurman Field.
With the win, the Nuts (20-25) finished with a 4-3 mark during their seven game homestand, and snapped a four-game losing streak against Visalia.
Taylor Featherston belted a 2-run homer in the bottom of the first to get the Nuts off to a good start, and they would never look back en route to victory.
Nuts starter Tyler Gagnon (3-3) worked out of a couple big jams to allow just one earned run, even though he gave up seven hits in five innings of work for the win. After putting two on with no outs in the second, Gagnon struck out the next two hitters before allowing his only run of the night on a two-out single by Matt Helm. Gagnon ran into trouble in the third putting two on with no out again, but battled to strike out slugger Mike Lamb and then got clean-up hitter Ryan Court to hit into an inning-ending double play.
Gagnon left in the sixth after allowing two singles to start the inning, but reliever Nelson Gonzalez came in and got three quick outs without allowing a run to score. Visalia would manage 10 hits in the contest, but they were all singles, and went just 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
On the flip-side, Modesto had one of their most consistent nights offensively all season, scoring in five of their eight innings at the plate. Tim Smalling doubled in a run in the third, and Featherston added an RBI single in the fifth against Rawhide starter Kyle Winkler. Juan Crousset tripled in a run in the sixth, with Winkler leaving before the end of the inning. Reliever Diogenes Rosario came in and gave up an RBI double to Brian Humphries as Winkler (1-4) was tagged for six earned runs in the loss.
Jordan Ribera added an RBI triple in the seventh against Rosario to cap Modesto's night offensively. Modesto went 6-for-17 with runners in scoring position.
Gonzalez would go 2 2/3 innings while allowing just one baserunner on a walk, while striking out a season-high of five in the process. Ken Roberts got the final four outs, giving up a run on a two-out RBI single by Evan Marzilli in the ninth.
Modesto now heads into a scheduled off day, before hitting the road for seven games starting on Thursday night in Lake Elsinore. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. Following four games against the Storm, the Nuts will rematch against the Rawhide next Monday through Wednesday in Visalia, before returning home Thursday, May 30th, to host the High Desert Mavericks.
