Lancaster Stormers News Release
Left-hander Yunior Novoa has been inked to a 2012 contract to return to the Lancaster Barnstormers, it was announced today by manager Butch Hobson.
Novoa, 27, was 5-5 with a 5.33 ERA in a variety of roles for the Barnstormers in 2011. The lanky southpaw from Las Matas de Farfan, Dominican Republic made 13 starts along with 20 relief appearances and posted a stellar ratio of 76 strikeouts to just 24 walks in his 82 2/3 innings of work.
His most notable outing came on July 9 in the first game of a day-night doubleheader at York. Novoa, making a spot start, fired five shutout innings on just three hits helping the Barnstormers clinch the first half Freedom Division title with a 4-3 victory over the Revolution that afternoon.
During the off-season, Novoa pitched for Toros del Este in the Dominican Winter League. He threw scoreless baseball in eight of his nine appearances.
Prior to joining the Barnstormers, Novoa spent three seasons in the Chicago White Sox organization and five more with the Washington Senators. His most effective season came in 2008 when he split time between Class A Potomac and Class AA Harrisburg. Novoa went 4-2 with four saves and a 2.09 ERA over 45 relief outings that year.
He reached Class AAA Syracuse the following season and appeared in 19 games with a 3.66 ERA.
"(Yunior) pitched great in the starting rotation for us last season," said Hobson. "He should really be a guy who can solidify the rotation for us."
The Lancaster Barnstormers are entering their eighth season as a member of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. Home games are played at Clipper Magazine Stadium in downtown Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Please call 717.509.HITS (4487) or visit LancasterBarnstormers.com for more information.
