Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
Southern Maryland Blue Crabs Manager Patrick Osborn has announced the return of infielder David Espinosa, and the signing of Atlantic League newcomer, outfielder Mike Daniel. Espinosa played in just 7 games with the Blue Crabs in 2011.
Mike Daniel will make his Atlantic League debut this season, after most recently playing in the Rockies organization with Double-A Tulsa. Daniel brings a left-handed bat and defensive versatility to the Blue Crabs. A veteran of seven professional seasons, six of those in the Washington Nationals Organization, Daniel played primarily outfield. After debuting as a professional in 2005, Daniel advanced as far as Triple-A Syracuse in the Nationals system. In 683 games as a pro, Daniel boasts an on-base percentage of .335.
Originally selected by Cincinnati in the 1st round of the 2000 draft, David Espinosa rounds out the latest Blue Crabs signings. Espinosa has spent 7 of his 11 professional seasons in affiliated ball, landing stints with Cincinnati, Detroit, and Seattle, reaching as high as Triple-A Toledo of the Tigers organization in 2007. Espinosa made his debut with the Atlantic League in 2008 in Camden with the Riversharks playing in just 11 games before going to Grand Prairie of the American Association League. Entering his twelfth professional season, the switch-hitter can play all over the diamond, mostly at shortstop and second base. Espinosa has demonstrated a decent amount of power during his career. In 1185 career games, Espinosa has accumulated 87 home runs and 512 RBI.
The Blue Crabs have now announced the first 15 official signings for the 2012 roster. The team is expected to begin spring workouts with at least 30 players and will start the season with 27 active players.
The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs are a member of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball, and play at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf, Maryland. The franchise is entering its 5th Anniversary season in the spring of 2012, coming off the team's third consecutive playoff appearance.
