LAST WEEK:

THU March 10 ACES @ Jacksonville (11-3 Loss)

[JACKSONVILLE, FL] - The Jacksonville Barracudas showed the advantage of home ice Thursday night, defeating the Asheville Aces 11-3 in Jacksonville.

Jacksonville took the lead early in the game with a powerplay goal scored by Brent Rumble (8:35) followed by one by Matt Mathias (16:42). The Barracudas continued their domination of the Aces, scoring seven more times in the second with two goals from Brent Rumble (earning him a hat trick during the period), Aaron Wilson, two from BJ Stephens, Greg Lecolst, and Glen Crawford. The Aces sole goal in the period came from Ryan Crowther on an assist from Chad Brandimore and Jan Kentos (14:42)

Asheville made their presence known in the third period with goals from Chester Gallant (assist by Chris Kovalcik) and Jan Kentos (assist by Chad Brandimore and Chester Gallant). Jacksonville's Brent Rumble and Brad Federenko also scored in the third.

The main action in the third period was not in front of the net. It was the long awaited showdown between Asheville's Chris Kovalcik and Jacksonville's Chris Ferguson. The fight was a draw ending in five minute major penalties being awarded to both players.

Asheville goalie Mark Scally faced forty-six shots over the course of the game allowing nine through. Scally was replaced by Jorge Alves in the third. Alves allowed two goals scored in under ten minutes resulting from five shots on goal.

FRI March 11 Knoxville @ ACES (4-3 Loss)

[ASHEVILLE, NC] - The Knoxville Ice Bears scored mid-way through the third period to break a 3-3 tie and head on to victory versus the Asheville Aces Friday night in front of 3,512 fans. With the victory, the Ice Bears clinch first place overall in the regular season in the SPHL.

Asheville scored first with a power play goal from Josh Fey who batted in a rebound past Knoxville goalie Terry Dunbar (35 saves on 38 shots) at 14:57 of the first period. The remainder of the period was tight, and Aces goalie Mark Scally (52 saves on 56 shots) was stellar in net stopping all 17 shots thrown at him during the first.

The Ice Bears brought the game to a 1-1 tie early in the second as Liam McCarthy scored at 3:03. David Bagley made it 2-1 Knoxville four minutes later but the Aces battled hard and Chad Brandimore scored an incredible goal deking Dunbar to make the score 2-2. The see-saw battle continued as Aces defender Robert Cardinal scored on a quick shot from the blue line at 13:07. But Curtis Menzul brought the score even four minutes later.

It was Bagley's second goal of the night that crushed the hopes of the Aces as he beat Scally on a two-on-one - burying a cross ice pass from line mate, and SPHL scoring leader Kevin Swider. The Aces fought hard throughout the remainder of the game but could not beat Dunbar to send the game to overtime.

SAT March 12 Columbus @ ACES

The Asheville Aces ended their home game season on a low note losing to the Columbus Cottonmouths Saturday night 10-4 in Asheville.

The game was well matched in the first period with the Aces taking the lead on a goal scored by Chris Kovalcik assisted by Eldon Cheechoo and Billy Cameron under two minutes into the game. Columbus answered quickly with a power play goal from Jim Underwood (6:30) and added another by Tom McMonagle (16:44). Asheville's Martin Viazanica tied the game with a power play goal to end the period.

Columbus took the lead again in the second with goals coming from Ryan Haggarty and Tim Green in the first seven minutes of the period. Asheville again rallied back with two power play goals coming from Eldon Cheechoo and Billy Cameron.

The third period was not as fortunate for the Aces as the Cottonmouths scored six unanswered goals with three coming from Tim Green, one from Tylor Keller, and two from Ryan Haggerty.
