Northwest Arkansas Drilled by Tulsa, 12-2

July 21, 2018 - Texas League (TL1)
Northwest Arkansas Naturals News Release

SPRINGDALE, Ark - The Naturals were seeking their third consecutive win but the visitors put that out of reach early as Northwest Arkansas (6-21, 41-56) gets drilled by Tulsa (20-8, 54-44) on Saturday night at Arvest Ballpark by a 12-2 final. The Naturals will look to bounce back with a win on Sunday afternoon as they go for a 4-game series win over Drillers.

A night after being shutout, Tulsa wasted little time flexing their offensive muscle in Game 3 on Saturday. The Drillers scored a run in the first on a sacrifice fly by Will Smith and another in the second on a solo home run by D.J. Peters for an early 2-0 lead.

Leading 2-0 in the third, the Drillers would take advantage of some miscues by Northwest Arkansas to break the game wide open with a nine-run frame. Jacob Scavuzzo started the scoring with a RBI single before a wild pitch plated the second run. The third and fourth runs came in on a fielder's choice topped by a throwing error by Samir Duenez. Mike Ahmed followed with a two-run double before Luke Raley finished the high-scoring inning with a three-run homer for a commanding 11-0 advantage.

The nine runs allowed in the third were the most given up in an inning this year surpassing seven against Arkansas on May 14.

The visitors would add another run in the fourth on a run-single by Wes Darvill before the Naturals would get a run on the board. Erick Mejia led-off the home half of the frame with a double to right-center and scored on a groundout by Duenez.

Northwest Arkansas would score another run in the fifth to complete the scoring at 12-2 as newcomer Nick Heath collected his first Double-A hit with a triple into the right field corner that scored Kort Peterson, whom worked a walk earlier in the frame.

Vines (L, 0-1) took the loss his first home start for Northwest Arkansas and second of the year since being called up on July 15 from Advanced-A Wilmington. Tony Gonsolin (W, 2-0) earned the win for Tulsa by tossing 6.0 innings of two-run baseball.

After the early offense, Naturals' relievers Dallas Beeler and Bryan Brickhouse only gave up a run through 6.0 innings of relief.

The Naturals were out-hit by a 15-to-5 margin as Mejia led the way offensively with a 3-for-4 night with two doubles.

Northwest Arkansas will conclude their series against the Tulsa Drillers, the Double-A Affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers, with the series finale of this 4-game set tomorrow afternoon - Sunday, July 22 - with first pitch scheduled for 2:05 p.m. Gates will open at 1:00 p.m. for First Responders Day presented by Slim Chickens on Kids Eat FREE Family Sunday with Mercy Kids Run the Bases.
