North Shore Spirit News Release
The North Shore Spirit used the long ball to beat the Elmira Pioneers 3-1 last night at New Fraser Field in Lynn. Eddie Muth clouted a solo homerun to right field in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift the Spirit to their second consecutive win.
The Spirit jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning, when Rob Fischer singled with one out, stole second and scored on a Jason Startari double to right-center field. It was Startari's twenty-ninth RBI of the year.
Elmira rallied to tie the score in the top of the third; Jason Baker started the inning off with a single, stole second base and scored on Cleatus Davidson's double to tie the score at 1-1. The Pioneers threaten to take the lead later on in the third, when they loaded the bases, but Sugarman provoked Alex Marconi to ground out to end the threat.
Muth hit his game winning homer in the sixth inning; it was Muth's fourth round tripper of the year. The RBI moved Muth into a tie for the team lead with Sepulveda; each player has knocked in 32 runners.
The Spirit added an important insurance run in the eighth inning. John Schmitz reached on an infield single and Carlos Sepulveda singled, when his sacrifice bunt fell into no-mans land. A Frank Charles groundout advanced the runners to second and third base, with first base open Elmira reliever Ken Henderson intentionally walked Ed Muth to load the bases. The strategy backfired when Henderson hit the next batter, Rob Fischer to force in a run to make the score 3-1.
Sugarman (5-1) worked eight solid inning scattering five hits, walking four and striking-out seven to win for the fifth time.
Spirit closer Joe Ricciardi worked an effective one, two, three ninth inning to pickup his ninth save of the year.
Elmira starter Geronimo Mendoza (8-6) suffered the loss.
The win improves the Spirit record to 14-10, while Elmira drops to 14-10.
The clubs play game two of their three game series Friday at New Fraser Field. The Spirit will send Bryan Morse to the hill, the Pioneers counter with Ryo Takeuchi
