Sanford Mainers News Release

SANFORD, Maine - The Sanford Mainers played the second of two straight games against the North Shore Navigators on Wednesday night, and a strong bullpen performance out of the Navigators proved to be the difference in a 7-4 win over the Mainers.

Sanford struck first and struck quickly in the bottom of the first inning. A single, a hit-by-pitch, and a walk loaded the bases for Ubaldo Lopez (Georgetown) in his first Mainers plate appearances. Lopez took a ball of his hip for another hit-by-pitch in the inning, driving in the first run of the game. On the very next batter, Ryan Turenne (Maine) clubbed a ball over the left fielder's head to clear the bases with a 3-RBI double and give Sanford a 4-0 lead.

Josh Joy (Southern Maine) made the start for the home team, and had a clean first two innings before the long ball hurt him. After striking out four in the first two innings, the first three batters of the North Shore third inning reached to load the bases for Joe Lomuscio, who hit a grand slam over the left-field wall to tie the game at four. Joy's day finished an inning later, after 3.1 innings, giving up five hits, four earned runs, two walks and having five strikeouts.

Neither team could score until North Shore in the top of the sixth inning. The Navigators' lead off hitter reached on a single, and eventually scored on another single from Jonathan Luders to give the visitors a 5-4 lead.

From there the North Shore bullpen dominated, finishing the last four innings of shutout, no-hit ball and combining for seven strikeouts. From the final out in the fifth inning until the end of the game, the Navigators retired 13 consecutive Mainers hitters.

Two more insurance runs for North Shore in the ninth inning sealed the fate of the game, as the Navigators finished off the Mainers in a 7-4 win.

Sanford goes back on the road tomorrow for their third matchup of seven against the Keene SwampBats. The next home game at Goodall Park is Saturday for another game against Keene.
