Newport Gulls News Release

NEWPORT, R.I. - Newport (6-1) got back in the win column Tuesday, defeating the Bristol Blues (1-8) 7-5 at Cardines Field. The game marked Newport's fourth consecutive victory, its last two coming against Bristol.

The Gulls struck first in the second inning when Grayson Moore drove in Justin Guerrera on an RBI groundout. Newport would tack on another in the third on Dawson Brigman's sacrifice fly, which drove in CJ Pittaro close play at the plate.

Grant Umberger made his first start with Newport, and gave the Gulls four innings of hitless baseball. Despite walking two batters in the first inning, Umberger settled in and struck out eight of the sixteen batters he faced while giving up only one earned run.

In the top of the fifth, Newport surrendered the lead but quickly responded in the bottom half thanks to a Spenser Smith solo home run, his first as a Gull, to cut the deficit down to one.

Newport tied the game and recaptured the lead in the sixth inning, following a series of walks and a few passed balls. However, the game's key hit came from the Vanderbilt product, Pittaro, who in the bottom of the eighth delivered an RBI single to drive in a huge insurance run for Newport for his third hit of the game.

Leading 7-5 entering the ninth, Newport sent Peter Sakellaris into the game to close the deal. After the first batter reached second on an error, Sakellaris rebounded, forcing three flyouts to right fielder Sam Cochrane, putting Newport in the win column for the fourth-straight game.

The Gulls are back in action against the Danbury Westerners tomorrow night at Cardines Field. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
