North Adams SteepleCats News Release

MONTPELIER, Vt. - Trailing by a run in the sixth, North Adams snuck ahead with two runs to grab a 6-5 lead, but Vermont came right back with three runs in the home half and proved to be the difference, as the SteepleCats fell for the second straight night, 8-5, in an NECBL Western Division battle at Montpelier Recreation Field on Tuesday night.

Droppings its fourth consecutive road tilt of the year, the SteepleCats (4-5) saw their record dip under .500 for the first time this season, as the Mountaineers (6-2) extended their league-best six-game winning streak thanks to a pair of home runs and a key two-RBI double to tame the visitors.

Designated hitter Kenny Townes and leadoff man Thomas Roulis each finished with a team-leading two RBI for the host Mountaineers, whiles sophomore Julian Loret de Mola (Nova Southeastern) pounded North Adams' first home run of the season - a two-run jack in the top of the first - to highlight the SteepleCats' night offensively.

Both starters wound up with no decisions, as freshman Kyle Driscoll (Rutgers) lasted just 2 2/3 for the SteepleCats, surrendering four earned runs on three hits while striking out three and walking three. David Hickey, meanwhile, lasted three innings, giving up three on six hits while striking out four.

Out of the bullpen, sophomore Dominic Severino (CCSU) made his first pitching appearance of the year for North Adams, and after benefitting from a strikeout to get out of a jam in the fifth, the righty was tagged for the loss in relief after surrendering the game-deciding three runs in the bottom of the sixth. David Rosenberger wound up with the win, finishing with 3 1/3 frames of hitless ball to pace the Mountaineers out of the 'pen.

North Adams did not wait long to take an early lead, as Loret de Mola cranked the SteepleCats' first homer of the year on a two-out no-doubter over the left field wall, scoring himself and junior Joe Landi (Rhode Island) to put the visitors up by a 2-0 margin after the first half inning of play.

After Driscoll navigated around a bases-loaded, one-out situation in the bottom of the first, the SteepleCats tacked on another run on an RBI groundout off the bat of freshman Kevin Martir (Maryland).

But in the home half of that frame, Vermont managed to load the bases with nobody out against the starter Driscoll, and after yielding a sacrifice fly and a run-scoring groundout, the right-hander saw Townes launch a two-run homer over the right field wall to give the Mountaineers a 4-3 lead after three.

Following a scoreless fourth and fifth, North Adams began the seesaw battle with two runs in the top of the sixth to take a one-run lead. After freshman Brad Anderson (Pepperdine) reached on a one-out single and moved to second on a passed ball. Then, with two outs, sophomore Vinny Zarrillo (Rutgers) ripped a single that deflected off the glove of the second baseman that brought in Anderson, and on the errant throw home, Zarrillo trotted all the way to third.

A batter later, freshman Jacob Huckabay (UT-Pan American) ripped a grounder that bounced hard and off the Vermont pitcher and into no-man's land, allowing Zarrillo to score while giving the visitors a temporary 5-4 lead.

But the Mountaineers came right back an inning later against Severino, who induced a leadoff pop up but yielded a walk and a single before leadoff man Thomas Roulis pounded a two-RBI double into deep left center, scoring a pair to put the home side up by one. Roulis would eventually come in on a wild pitch to up Vermont's edge to 7-5 after six innings.

The hosts would tack on one more run thanks to a solo shot in the seventh to account for the final margin of victory, handing North Adams its fourth straight road loss in the process.

The SteepleCats and Mountaineers will complete the two-day home-and-home series tomorrow (June 19) back in the Berkshires. First pitch from Joe Wolfe Field is set for 6:30 p.m.
