
Dozen NECBL Alumni Named All-Americans

The accolades keep pouring in for NECBL alumni- and in one case for a current member.
Baseball America, the NCBWA and Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball News all recently announced their All-American teams. A dozen NECBL players landed a spot on at least one of these coveted teams. Two players, 2010 Top Prospect and Stanford RHP Mark Appel, and 2012 MVP and Troy OF Danny Collins, were named to all three squads.
The NECBL congratulates each player on the recognition of his outstanding spring.
RHP Mark Appel/2010 Newport/Stanford- Appel went 6-1 with a 1.87 ERA during his time at Newport. He ended the summer ranked as the NECBL's Top Prospect, after holding hitters to a .210 average against. At Stanford this spring, Appel went 10-4 with a 2.12 ERA and 130 strikeouts in 14 starts. OF Danny Collins/ 2012 Laconia/Troy- Collins won the NECBL's MVP Award in a summer where he hit .390 with 19 homers and 37 RBI. His home runs, .818 slugging percentage and 29 extra base hits were all new NECBL single season records. Collins finished second in the NECBL batting race. This spring, Collins hit .363 with 11 homers, 67 RBI and 24 doubles. Collins was the Pittsburgh Pirates' 13th round pick in the 2013 Draft. DH L.B. Dantzler/2011 Laconia/South Carolina- In 23 games for Laconia, 3B Dantzler hit .333 with six doubles, three home runs, 12 RBI and five steals. Dantzler had an OPS of .951 during his summer at Laconia. At South Carolina this spring, Dantzler went .322/.434/.624 with 15 homers and 51 RBI. Dantzler was the Toronto Blue Jays' 14th round pick of the 2013 Draft. (3rd Tm Baseball America)
SS Mike Fransoso/2010 Bristol and 2011 Old Orchard Beach/Maine- Fransoso hit .276 with a homer, 11 RBI and eight steals in his second summer in the NECBL. At Maine this spring, Fransoso hit .353 with four homers, 49 RBI and 20 steals. Fransoso was the Pittsburgh Pirates' 27th round pick in the 2013 Draft. (3rd Tm Louisville Slugger)
OF Connor Harrell/2010 Newport/Vanderbilt- Harrell hit .274 with seven doubles and two HRs in 26 games for the Gulls. He hit a third homer in the NECBL playoffs. On a Vandy team ranked number one for much of the year, Harrell's splits were .312/.418/.530 with 12 homers, 67 RBI and nine steals. Harrell was the Detroit Tigers' 7th round pick of the 2013 Draft. OF Tyler Horan/2011 Danbury/Virginia Tech- Horan hit .341 with 11 homers and 35 RBI for Danbury. The homers and RBI total led the NECBL. For Virginia Tech this spring, Horan hit .349 with 11 homers, 50 RBI, 24 doubles and four triples. Horan was the San Francisco Giants' 8th round pick in the 2013 Draft. (2nd Tm Louisville Slugger)
3B Eric Jagielo/2011 North Shore/Notre Dame- Jagielo hit .313 with seven doubles and 28 RBI for North Shore. He ranked fourth in the League in hits and finished the summer on the NECBL's All-League Second Team. At Notre Dame, won the Big East Player of the year in which he hit .395 with nine homers, 51 RBI, 18 doubles and had an OBP of .500. Jagielo was the New York Yankees' first round pick of the 2013 Draft. (2nd Tm Baseball America and 3rd Tm Louisville Slugger)
OF Mike Papi/2012 Keene/Virginia- In 22 games for Keene, Papi hit .271 with five extra base hits and 10 RBI. The 6'3" lefty had a .427 OBP and walked almost twice as much as he struck out. His splits at UVa this season were .393/.527/.625 with six homers, six steals and 55 RBI. (1st Tm Baseball America)
3B Logan Pierce/2012 Vermont/Troy-Pierce hit .339 with four homers, 12 doubles and 17 RBI for Vermont, making the NECBL's All-Star team in the process. At Troy this spring, Pierce hit .373 with eight homers, 23 doubles and 62 RBI. Pierce was the Philadelphia Phillies' 15th round pick of the 2013 Draft. (3rd Tm Louisville Slugger)
RHP Tyler Rogers/2012 Vermont/Austin Peay-Rogers appeared in 13 games for Vermont, striking out 21 in 21.2 IP. This spring, Rogers went 7-2 with a 1.83 ERA and 21 saves, ranking among Division I leaders. Rogers was the San Francisco Giants' 10th round pick of the 2013 Draft. RHP Travis Stout/2013 Plymouth/Jacksonville State- The book is still being written on Stout, who currently closes for the 2013 Plymouth Pilgrims. At Jacksonville State this spring, Stout went 3-0 with a 1.42 ERA, 17 saves and 29 strikeouts in 31 innings. (3rd Tm Louisville Slugger)
RHP Jeff Thompson/2011 Keene/Louisville- Thompson was the 2011 NECBL's Top Prospect and the starter in that summer's All-Star game. He went 2-2 with a 1.90 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 38 innings for Keene. This spring for Louisville, Thompson won the Big East Pitcher of the Year, going 10-1 with a 2.09 ERA and 97 strikeouts in 90 innings.
