HERSHEY, PA - John Gibson made 40 saves and stopped all five shooters faced in the overtime shootout to lead the Norfolk Admirals (7-2-0-3) to a 4-3 victory over the Hershey Bears (2-4-2-1) at the Giant Center Sunday evening. Norfolk went 2-0-0-1 in the three-game weekend road set, and earned five of a possible six standings points.
The Admirals sailed out of the gates in the first period of play assuming a 2-0 lead. Peter Holland, who was reassigned by the Anaheim Ducks earlier in the day, hurled a shot from the blue line which beat Hershey goaltender Dave Leggio who was screened in front. Holland's fourth goal of the season gave Norfolk a 1-0 lead at 4:56.
Five minutes later, Alex Grant carried the puck to the right wing circle and wristed a shot past Leggio to extend the Norfolk lead by two.
The Bears snapped out of their early first period hibernation, and roared back to score three unanswered goals in the final six minutes of the opening frame. Cameron Schilling delivered a shot that was tipped and redirected into the Norfolk net for a goal by Ryan Stoa.
Moments later, Hershey took advantage of a pair of Norfolk penalties which resulted in a 5-on-3 power play opportunity. Dmitry Orlov received the puck at the high slot and wristed a shot high past the reaching glove of Admirals goaltender John Gibson to tie the game at two.
The Bears captured the lead nearly a minute later, as Dane Byers buried the puck into the net after receiving a pass from Orlov to give Hershey the 3-2 lead at the end of first period of play.
Things remained relatively quiet for the second period and most of the third. Trailing by one goal with 90 seconds remaining in regulation, the Admirals pulled Gibson to allow for the extra attacker. Rookie Kevin Gagne hurled a shot from the point which found its way into the back of the Hershey net to tie the game at three. Gagne's first professional goal came with 1:02 remaining in regulation, and eventually forced overtime.
Both teams traded off chances in the extra session, but neither could seal the game. In the fourth round of the shootout, Chris Wagner was the only player to score, when he wristed a shot high past Leggio. Gibson turned aside all five shooters to secure the 4-3 shootout victory for the Admirals.
Gibson earned the win turning aside 40 of 43 shots faced, while Leggio takes the loss allowing three goals on 28 shots.
