
Norfolk Admirals 2012-13 Season Wrap Up

NORFOLK - Last weekend, the Admirals finished the 2012-13 regular season with a 37-34-4-1 record, good for 79 points and 10th place in the Eastern Conference. The Admirals fell three points short of qualifying for the 2013 Calder Cup Playoffs and were eliminated from contention following a loss at Providence on Sunday.
On Feb. 8th, the Admirals were tied for last place in the American Hockey League's Eastern Conference, sitting ten points out of playoff contention. Norfolk fought its way back into the playoff picture with a 19-11-2-0 record after Feb. 8th, climbing as high as seventh in the Eastern Conference standings last week. However, the Manchester Monarchs and Hershey Bears both passed Norfolk last weekend to claim the final two Eastern Conference playoff berths.

Patrick Maroon ended the season leading the team with 26 goals and 50 points. His 26 goals were tied for 13th in the league and his 12 power play goals tied him for fifth. Maroon named the winner of the 2012-13 Norfolk Admirals Player of the Year award, as voted upon by the players and coaching staff and presented by the club and Beach Engraving.
Sami Vatanen was named First-Team AHL All-Star and to the AHL All-Rookie Team after he led the team with 36 assists and contributed 45 points. Vatanen finished the season tied for fourth in scoring among all AHL defensemen and tied for tenth in scoring among all AHL rookies.
Frederik Andersen had a strong showing in his first year of North American professional hockey, going 24-18-1, 2.19 goals-against-average (GAA) and a .929 save percentage (SV%). He ranked in the top ten of wins (T-9th), GAA (6th) and SV% (2nd) in the American Hockey League.
Norfolk ranked fourth in penalty killing this season, killing 86.1% of all penalties they faced. The Admirals killed 43 of 44 opponent power plays (97.7%) over their last 11 games of the season - including a stretch of 33 consecutive opponent power plays killed.
Norfolk had the third-best record in games decided after regulation in the AHL this season, going 6-4 in overtime and 7-1 in the shootout. The Admirals earned 31 points in 18 overtime games (T-3rd in AHL) and had a .861 points percentage in overtime (3rd in AHL).
Twelve members of the 2012-13 Admirals squad have also played in the NHL this season: Emerson Etem, Viktor Fasth, Jordan Hendry, Peter Holland, Brandon McMillan, Patrick Maroon, Kyle Palmieri, Devante Smith-Pelly and Sami Vatanen have all played with the Admirals' NHL parent club, the Anaheim Ducks. In addition, Kent Huskins has played for Detroit and Philadelphia, Jay Rosehill has played for Philadelphia and Harry Zolnierczyk has played for Philadelphia.

THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT IN NORFOLK
Down the stretch, the Admirals had several players join the club from their college or junior teams. These players made immediate contributions in Norfolk and gave Admirals fans a glimpse of what the future of the Ducks organization will look like. Forwards Charlie Sarault (11GP, 0G, 6A, 6PTS), Steven Whitney (8GP, 3G, 1A, 4PTS) and Max Friberg (6GP, 1G, 0A, 1PT) have each earned their first professional points since joining Norfolk. Defenseman Kevin Gagne (5GP, 0G, 1A, 1PT) earned his first professional point on Sunday in Providence and goaltender John Gibson made his professional debut in relief on Friday in Syracuse.
These five players joined an already-talented crop of Admirals freshmen that are all under contract with Anaheim in 2013-14: forwards Chris Wagner and Emerson Etem, defensemen Sami Vatanen and Hampus Lindholm, and goaltenders Frederik Andersen and Igor Bobkov.

DUCKS CLINCH PACIFIC DIVISION, #2 SEED IN WESTERN CONFERENCE
The Anaheim Ducks (29-11-6, 64 points) have locked up the 2012-13 Pacific Division title and the second seed in the Western Conference. The Ducks wrap up the regular season at Vancouver Thursday and home vs. Phoenix Saturday. The 2013 Stanley Cup playoffs start next week. Kyle Palmieri, Emerson Etem and Viktor Fasth have been regular contributors to Anaheim's success down the stretch after playing for the Admirals earlier this season. Frederik Andersen, Patrick Maroon and Devante Smith-Pelly were each recalled from Norfolk earlier today.
