Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - The Colorado Rockies announced today that Gold Glove third baseman Nolan Arenado will begin a rehabilitation assignment with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox starting tonight, Saturday, June 28 against the Iowa Cubs (Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs). Arenado will is scheduled to take batting practice today with the team and if all goes well will likely start for the Sky Sox in the team's 6:05 PM game at Security Service Field. Arenado has been on the disabled list since May 25 with a left middle finger mallet fracture. The Sox are in the midst of a nine-game, eight-day home stand with home games scheduled through July 3.
Arenado, 23, had a historic rookie season with the Rockies in 2013 that featured him becoming the second rookie third baseman to be awarded the Rawlings Gold Glove in the 57-year history of the award (Frank Malzone in 1957). At third, he finished with just 11 errors in 411 total chances and routinely made highlight reel plays throughout the season.
This will be his second appearance as a member of the Sky Sox as he started the 2013 season with the club out of Spring Training. A member of the Sky Sox Opening Day roster that year, Arenado played in 18 games and hit .364 (24-for-66) with three homers and 11 doubles to go along with 14 runs scored and 21 RBI. He had his contract purchased by the Rockies on April 28 and made his Major League debut that night at Arizona.
