Andrew Chafin Dominant in Shutout Win

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- The night belonged to Aces left-hander Andrew Chafin as the southpaw tossed eight shutout innings to lead Reno to a 2-0 win over the Albuquerque Isotopes Saturday night.

Chafin allowed a single in each of the first four innings, but Albuquerque never put a runner past second base all night.

Trayvon Robinson singled to start the third, then Chafin recorded three straight groundouts to retire the side.

In the fourth, Brian Cavazos-Galvez began the frame with a sharp single to left-field. It didn't matter much as Chafin got Walter Ibarra to bounce into a 6-4-3 double play and ended the inning by striking out Erisbel Arruebarrena. Chafin struck out a season-high nine and recorded 13 groundball outs.

Reno took advantage of a physical error and a mental error by the "˜Topes in the sixth. Delvis Morales mishandled a flip from the shortstop Arruebarrena on a possible double play ball that would have ended the inning.

Instead, in continued for Mike Jacobs who singled to load the bases for Bobby Wilson with one out. The Aces catcher hit a comebacker to Jeff Bennett who fired to first instead of going to the plate. The mistake cost the right-hander a run as Aaron Cunningham scored to take a 1-0 lead.

From the fourth to the eighth, Chafin retired 11 straight batters. With one out in the eighth, pinch-hitter Griff Erickson singled to put the tying run on base. It went by the wayside when Chafin struck out Trayvon Robinson and Wilson gunned down Erickson trying to swipe second.

The Aces got an insurance run in the top of the ninth when Tony Campana singled, went to third on an error, and scored on a passed ball.

Jake Barrett came on for the ninth and worked around a one-out single to grab his first save with the Aces.

The two teams have split the first four games in the series and conclude the five-game set Sunday. Right-hander Bo Schultz (5-5, 5.40) gets the ball for Reno against Albuquerque right-hander Red Patterson (3-6, 4.81). First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 PST.
