Portland Sea Dogs News Release
(Portland, Maine) - The Binghamton Mets used a three-run sixth inning to beat the Portland Sea Dogs, 8-5 on Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field in front of 6,306 fans. With the loss, Portland drops two of three in the series and is 0-2-1 in their last three series.
Portland led 4-3 after five but the Mets scored those three runs in the sixth off losing pitcher Drake Britton (3-4). Joe Bonfe (4-for-4, 3 RBI) gave the Mets a 5-4 lead with a two-run single to left and Josh Rodriguez's RBI single proved to be the game-winning hit. The B-Mets added two runs in the ninth on a dropped fly ball by left-fielder Tony Thomas.
Britton took his second consecutive loss, giving up seven hits, six runs (five earned) over 5.2 IP. The lefty walked two and fanned four.
Cory Mazzoni (2-1) tossed 6.1 innings on 10 hits and five runs to secure his second win of the season. John Church retired all five batters to earn his fourth hold and Jack Leathersich pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save.
The Mets took a first-inning 1-0 lead for the third straight game on Cory Vaughn's two out run-scoring single. In the second, Binghamton grabbed a two-run advantage, thanks to an RBI double from Daniel Muno.
Portland took a 3-2 lead off Mazzoni in the third. Peter Hissey doubled Heiker Meneses to third base, but a throwing error by CF Darrell Ceciliani allowed Meneses to score. Xander Bogaerts tied the game with a run-scoring single and Michael Almanzar provided a sacrifice fly.
The Sea Dogs got a quick run in the fifth, when Peter Hissey tripled and scored on a wild pitch, extending Portland's lead to 4-2. After the Mets scored three in the sixth, the 'Dogs got their final run on Bogaerts' double to left-center field.
Will Latimer worked 2.1 scoreless innings of relief on five hits and two strikeouts. Pete Ruiz gave up two unearned runs in the ninth.
Portland is 2-4 during a 17-game stretch against Binghamton and New Hampshire.

On Monday night, the Sea Dogs open up a four-game series against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Blue Jays affiliate) at Hadlock Field. Knuckleballer Charlie Haeger (1-0, 3.45) makes his fourth start of the season for Portland. Righty Marcus Walden (2-4, 2.96) takes the mound for the Fisher Cats.
