St. Paul Saints News Release
WINNIPEG, MB (July 17, 2014) - The St. Paul Saints had a chance to do something they had never done in all the years they have been traveling north of the border: sweep the Winnipeg Goldeyes in a four game series at their park. Unfortunately, the Saints couldn't come up with timely hits and committed costly errors as they lost 7-2 on Thursday afternoon at Shaw Park.
The Saints got on the board in the fourth with a run, but had the opportunity for a big inning. They loaded the bases with nobody out on a single by Henry Wrigley, an Angelo Songco double and a hit by pitch to Joe Bonfe. Jake Taylor, however, hit a grounder to third that forced Wrigley at home. Jared McDonald plated the lone run when he reached on a fielder's choice to make it 1-0. McDonald was then thrown out trying to steal second to end the inning.
The tide turned in the fifth when the Saints once again loaded the bases with one out. Joey Becker led off with a double. With one out Maus doubled to left, but Becker had to hold to make sure the ball wouldn't be caught and only reached third. Evan Bigley was intentionally walked, but Wrigley grounded into an inning ending double play.
That gave the Goldeyes all the momentum they needed along with a little help from the Saints defense. Reggie Abercrombie led off with a double. Sam Kimmel dropped down a sacrifice bunt, but pitcher Robert Coe's throw to Maus covering first was a little off and got by Maus allowing Abercrombie to score and sending Kimmel to second. With two outs and the bases loaded Casey Haerther hit a comebacker, but Coe couldn't field it cleanly, managed to get the out at first, but the run scored making it 2-1 Goldeyes.
In the sixth the Goldeyes made it 3-1 on a solo homer from Donnie Webb, his seventh of the season.
The Goldeyes used another Saints error in the seventh to take a 4-1 lead. Brock Bond singled and moved to second on a single by Haerther. Jordan Guida then hit a grounder to short, but Joey Becker's throw to second went into shallow right allowing a run to score.
The Saints drew within two in the top of the eighth when Songco doubled. He finished the game 3-4 with two doubles and two runs scored while extending his hitting streak to nine games. He advanced to third on a Bonfe single and later scored on a passed ball.
The Goldeyes, however, put the game away with a three run eighth inning.
Devin Thaut joined Songco by extending his hitting streak to nine games going 1-5 and Sam Maus collected his first professional four hit game going 4-5 with two doubles. He also extended his streak of reaching base safely to 20 consecutive games.
The Saints head home for a three game series against the Laredo Lemurs beginning Friday night at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Anthony Claggett (4-4, 2.62) to the mound against Lemurs RHP Cesar Carillo (4-3, 3.06). Hall of Famer Lou Brock will make an appearance courtesy of Novo Nordisk to help promote living with Type 2 Diabetes. It is also Xcel Energy Friday Night Fireworks. The game can be heard on Sports Radio 105 The Ticket.
