Ninth-Inning Heroics for Washington
August 2, 2023 - Frontier League (FL)
Washington Wild Things News Release
CHAUMBURG, Il. - With Washington down to its final out in the middle game and in danger of being shutout for the third time in eight games, two big bats for Washington came alive. With back-to-back doubles, Wagner Lagrange and Andrew Czech tied the game and gave Washington the 2-1 lead that held up to even the series in Schaumburg.
Lagrange's double scored Wes Darvill, who had been hit by a Kobey Schlotman pitch with one out in the ninth. Lagrange scored on the Czech double down the right-field line. The doubles were two of Washington's three hits against Schlotman and in the game. The first of three was a lead-off double for Robert Chayka to start the game.
Schaumburg's lone run came on a solo blast from Brett Milazzo in the fifth inning of the game against Washington starter Zach Kirby.
Both starters were great in the middle game. Righty Zach Kirby secured his first pro quality start, logging six innings of one-run ball. He allowed five hits and struck out four before giving way to Justin Goossen-Brown in the seventh. Goose pitched a scoreless seventh and Christian James worked a scoreless eighth and received the win. Lukas Young allowed a lead-off single in the ninth but got the next three up to secure his eighth save of the season.
Schlotman took a tough-luck loss, logging 8.2 innings of two-run ball on three hits. He fanned five. Dylan Stutsman faced one batter and retired Tommy Caufield, who hit for Tristan Peterson in the ninth inning.
With the series deadlocked, Washington will turn to right-hander Justin Showalter in the rubber game tomorrow. Showalter will be opposed by righty Jackson Hickert for the Boomers. First pitch is slated for 7:30/6:30 p.m. CT at Wintrust Field. You can listen to the game at bit.ly/wtmixlr or by following @WashWildThings on the Mixlr app.
