Lancaster Stormers News Release
Another crazy ninth inning got the better of the Lancaster Barnstormers on Sunday afternoon.
The Camden Riversharks erupted for six runs in the top of the ninth to defeat the Barnstormers, 8-5, on the final day of play in the first half of the Atlantic League schedule.
Lancaster is 27-42 in the first half with the outcome of the May 18th suspended game against Long Island still pending.
With Lancaster leading, 3-2, Carlos Guzman opened the ninth with a cracked bat double yanked into the right field corner off Chad Beck (1-1), and Paddy Matera tied the game with a fly ball that dropped in down the right field line out of the reach of Brandon Jones. Daniel Rockett hit a sharp grounder in the direction of second baseman Yusuke Kajimoto, but also in the direction of third base umpire Bill Reuter. Reuter leapt out of the way, but Kajimoto appeared screened and the would-be double play grounder kicked away into right field sending Matera to third.
Willis Otanez screamed a double down the left field line, scoring two for a 5-3 lead. Beck hit Norberto Susini with a pitch and walked Zach MacPhee to load the bases.
Marcus Walden took over and yielded an RBI single to center by Brandon Chaves on his first pitch. Michael Rockett and Joel Guzman tacked on additional runs on outs before Carlos Guzman flied to left ending the frame after the six had scored.
The Barnstormers stroked consecutive singles by Brandon Jones, Jake Luce, Yusuke Kajimoto and Bryant Nelson in the bottom of the inning to bring the tying run to the plate with nobody out. Dan Blewett recovered to retire Kevin Rivers on a pop up to short, Mike McDade on a fly to shallow center and Brian Cavazos-Galvez on a fly to the front of the warning track in right to end the afternoon.
Camden scored in each of the first two innings as four of the first seven batters reached base off Bryan Woodall. The right-hander settled down and retired 17 of the final 18 batters he faced on the day.
Cavazos-Galvez drilled an RBI single to left in the bottom of the first, but it was a pair of solo home runs by Lance Zawadzki, in his first game off the disabled list, that vaulted Lancaster into the lead.
Steve Garrison (1-3) pitched three innings of relief for Camden to notch the win.
The Barnstormers head into the All-Star break and will resume action on Friday evening at Santander Stadium in York with right-hander Joe Gardner (3-1) on the mound. Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:15.
NOTES: Cavazos-Galvez and Jones each extended hitting streaks to six games...Zawadzki had his first multi-homer game as a Barnstormer...He had been out since dislocating his knee June 19...Woodall fired his eighth quality start and fourth in succession but still only has one win...Following the game, the Barnstormers traded utility infielder Bryant Nelson to Bridgeport...The Barnstormers lost five of the last 11 games of the first half when leading going into the final inning.
