CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Tied at three-all through two and a half innings, the Corpus Christi Hooks broke the game wide open with a nine-run bottom of the third inning to take a commanding 12-3 lead, and eventually cruised to a 13-4 win over the Arkansas Travelers on Thursday night at Whataburger Field.

The Travs (19-26) got on the board first as Carlos Ramirez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the first inning to score Renny Osuna, who singled to right field a couple of batters prior to Ramirez. Hooks' starter Jarred Cosart would induce an inning-ending double by Darwin Perez to wiggle off the hook in the first.

The Hooks (20-25) would provide three runs of support to Cosart in their half of the first and led 3-1 after one inning of play. The two-run lead would not last long as the Travs knotted the game at three-all in the next half inning. A one-out double to centerfield by Rian Kiniry scored Jimmy Swift, who doubled in the previous at-bat. After advancing to third base on a single by Jean Segura, Kiniry would race home on a sacrifice fly by Osuna.

Travs' starter Eddie McKiernan would work around a two-out double in the second inning to keep the Hooks off the board. Similar to what McKiernan did in the second, Cosart worked around a two-out double in the top of the third inning to keep the score at three-all.

A ringing double to centerfield by Jose Martinez to lead off the bottom of the third would kick-start the eventual monster inning for the Hooks. A RBI single by the following batter Jonathan Singleton would plate Martinez. Another single and a walk loaded the bases with no outs. McKiernan would force Kody Hinze to fly out to Casey Haerther on the infield to put the infield fly rule into effect.

On the first pitch Ryan McCurdy saw from McKiernan, the catcher unloaded the bases and gave the Hooks an 8-3 lead with a grand slam homerun. The big fly was McCurdy's first homerun of the season with the Hooks. McKiernan would pick up the second out of the inning on a fly out, but a hit-by-pitch and single put him back in a jam.

Martinez, who started the inning with a double, hit another double, this time for a pair of RBIs. With the Hooks now out in front, 10-3, Singleton added two more RBIs to his line in the inning as he launched a homerun to right field, ending the evening for McKiernan. McKiernan would only last 2.2 innings with 11 hits given up, 12 runs (nine earned), one walk, and three strikeouts.

The nine-run cushion would be all that Cosart would need to settle into his start as he end up working seven complete innings on the mound. Despite going deep into the game, Cosart was not untouchable as the Travs racked up 12 hits off of Cosart, but a 4-for-16 evening with runners in scoring position limited the Travs to their four runs.

The Travs will look to avoid the sweep at the hands of the Hooks as they will conclude their three-game series on Friday, May 25th. First pitch is set for 7:05 pm.
