San Antonio Missions News Release

San Antonio - The San Antonio Missions ended their four-game losing streak by defeating the visiting Springfield Cardinals 3-2 in extra innings of the second game of the three-game series.

Springfield struck early with an infield RBI single by Chris Swauger in the top of the first but Nate Freiman responded by hitting his Double-A leading 41 RBI to tie the game at one.

Springfield starter Tyler Lyons worked around a one-out bases loaded jam in the bottom of the third by forcing an inning-ending double play, effectively smothering the Missions' chance to open up the game.

The Cardinals reclaimed the lead on back-to-back doubles in the top of the fifth as Missions' starter Josh Geer gave up two runs on ten hits with one strikeout. The Missions scored the tying run one inning later but stranded two runners ending a potential rally.

Springfield threatened by loading the bases in the ninth with one out, but Missions reliever Matt Lollis escaped the jam without giving up a run.

Ali Solis, who led-off the inning with a walk, proved to be the winning run by scoring on Reymond Fuentes' walk-off single into right field.

With the win, the Missions improve to 20-26 on the season and look to win their first series tomorrow since sweeping Midland May 11-13.

Tomorrow's series finale will feature Springfield right-hander Scott Gorgen (1-3, 4.46 ERA) against Missions' right-hander Keyvius Sampson (2-3, 5.61 ERA). Also tomorrow night, the first 1,500 fans will receive a 2011 commemorative Championship t-shirt, courtesy of News 4 WOAI.

You can catch all the Missions action on KKYX 680 AM, the home of Missions baseball with Roy Acuff and Mike Saeger.
