ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (August 8, 2003) – The Surf tallied nine runs in the seventh inning, highlighted by Creighton Gubanich's grand slam, in a 11-7 victory over the Long Island Ducks in front of 4,423 on a foggy Friday evening at the Sandcastle.

Down 4-1 in the seventh inning, Atlantic City's Jose Velazquez roped a single into the foggy outfield to lead off the inning and Gubanich followed with a base hit of his own. Then pinch-hitter Ric Johnson looped a ball into centerfield that was lost in the fog by Long Island's Justin Davies to give Johnson a two-run double.

The umpires then called a fog delay that lasted 45 minutes till the fog finally lifted.

The Surf reeled off three straight hits that scored three runs before Gubanich delivered the big blow with a grand slam, his third homer of the season, over the left field wall to round out Atlantic City's nine-run inning.

Gubanich finished 3-4 with five RBI and two runs scored while Chad Gambill added three hits for the Surf.

Kimera Bartee had three hits with a solo homer for Long Island while Jamie Pogue went 2-4 with three RBI.

Reliever Travis Thompson (4-3) tossed a scoreless seventh inning to pick up the victory.

Ducks starter Jon Cannon had a solid start spoiled as he tossed six innings and allowed one run on four hits while striking out five and walking one.

ON DECK: The Surf and the Ducks play the second game of the series on Saturday, August 9, at 6:35 p.m., at the Sandcastle.
