August 8, 2003 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Allentown Ambassadors News Release

The Allentown Ambassadors and New Jersey Jackals each scored five runs in the third inning, but New Jersey already had a run in the second, and went on to win the game 6-5 Friday night in New Jersey.

The Jackals got their run in the second on a solo home run hit by Chris Rowan, his tenth of the season, off Ambassador starter Mike Riley.

The Ambassadors responded right away, scoring five runs in the third off Jackal starter Jackson Crowther. Ben Rosenthal started the inning by singling to left, then Cedrick Harris walked. Ender Gonzalez followed with a bunt that Crowther field and threw to third baseman Keith Maxwell, who was not standing at third base. With everyone safe and the bases loaded, Vic Davilla then drove in two with a single. After Brian Macchi struck out and Greg Schmidt reached on a fielder's choice, with Ender Gonzalez caught in a rundown and thrown out trying to score, Marlon Roche hit a triple driving in two more runs. Jorge Diaz then dropped down a bunt that Maxwell could not come up with in time and Roche scored to make it 5-1.

But the Jackals came right back with five runs of their own. John Anderson singled to begin the inning. Then Craig Conway hit a groundball to Gonzalez at short, who threw to Diaz at second to record one out, but Diaz dropped the ball taking it out of his glove and Conway was safe at first. Three consecutive singles followed from Darren Blakely, Mike Glendenning, and Travis Bailey scoring two. Then Carlos Pagan hit a three run home run down the left field line to give the Jackals the 6-5 lead. It was Pagan's seventh home run of the season. Riley has now allowed thirteen home runs this season, the most in the league.

Both pitchers settled down after that and neither team even threatened to score for the rest of the game. Riley finished with seven innings pitched, six runs on nine hits and six strikeouts. He took the loss and is now 1-4. Crowther got the win, pitching six innings and allowing five runs on six hits, allowing three walks and striking out eight. He is now 7-2. Julio Perez pitched a perfect ninth inning to get his fifth save of the season.

The loss drops the Ambassadors to 9-17 in the second half, while the Jackals improve to 13-12. The two teams play again tomorrow night in New Jersey with Miguel Perez taking the mound for the Ambassadors. Ryan Darcy gets the start for New Jersey.
