North Shore Spirit News Release
The North Shore Spirit defeated the Elmira Pioneers 2-1 Thursday night at the New Fraser Field in Lynn, MA.
Bryan Morse (4-4) pitched eight solid innings for the win, giving up seven hits and only one run and striking out five. Joe Ricciardi got the save, his tenth of the season, striking out Ryan Lehr with two runners on base to end the game. Ryo Takeuchi (1-3) picked up the loss for Elmira allowing three hits in 6 2/3 innings.
The Pioneers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Scott Hunter singled, stole second and advanced to third on an Alex Marconi single. Ryan Lehr grounded out into a double play, but Hunter scored on the play to give the Pioneers an early lead.
The Spirit retaliated in the fifth inning when Eddie Muth blasted a triple to left field and was waved home on a Yuri Sanchez double. Muth's triple was the Spirit's first hit of the game off Takeuchi.
The Spirit added an insurance run in the seventh inning due to three Elmira errors. Fran Riordan reached on an error and advanced to second. Jason Startari singled to pick up an RBI, his 29th of the season, putting the Spirit on top 2-1. On the play Startari eventually settled into third after the Elmira outfielders kicked and threw the ball around like a hot potato.
Wes Crawford (3-2) will take the mound for the Spirit on Saturday and will face Elmira's Hatuey Mendoza (4-5). The Spirit have now won three in a row and are 15-10 for the second half of the season.
The Spirit play game three against the Elmira Pioneers on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at the New Fraser Field. Saturday is the last day of "North Shore Tastings" where some of the finest dining establishments in the North Shore will give out food samples at the Clancy Gate on Western Avenue inside the New Fraser Field.
